This has been my first year as a coach leading a squad (JV). I had worked as a varsity assistant before but this was the first time I had the squad to myself. My background with other staffs had been pretty successful and my expectations were high since this group had a winning 8th grade and 9th grade team.
By no means am I upset at the head coach of varsity for this, but the two best studs were promoted to varisty (RB and DT). The RB was the sole driving force on offense last year. I lost three starters to academic ineligibility and lost another one because he had to help out with his mom and dad. So I guess I was in the hole to start with.
Currently, we are a 0-7 team. We have had four close games decided by one possession and the other three have been blowouts. We never are consistent in our execution and the juniors who come down to play are not exceptional players by any stretch. Today was an embarrassment and it was accentuated by the coach for the other team going for it on 4th and 11 with a running clock on his side. He was still attempting two points conversions up by 40 because, "his kicker was hurt,". At the end of the game, I confronted him and he said, "That's football, get your sorry butt off the field." Security had to restrain me.
What bothered me most, and I have grinded the kids hard in practice, is that they were laughing and giggling on the way back on the bus. I exploded and chewed them out.
Is this a group you just give up on and mail it in hoping that next year's is better? Do you grind the hell out of them the last three weeks?
Your feedback would be appreciated.
