Hey guys,
I don't know about other states, but I know that in California, we have a mandated "dead period" in which coaches cannot have contact with players before two-a-days. We always give our kids a running and workout schedule and encourage the seniors to be leaders and get guys together during the period to stay in shape, but still are usually not satisfied with the kind of shape our kids are in when they come back for two-a-days. Anyone have any good, tips, hints or tricks of the trade to help with this problem?

Not really. Unless you got a group of leaders that will "knock down doors" to get the other kids out.
We usually tell the kids, "If we are in good enough shape when 2-a-days start, then we will go full pads the first weekend. If not, then it will be helmets only, heavy emphasis on conditioning for AT LEAST 1 week."
This seems to help a little, but we still go 1 conditioning practice & 1 practice practice during the first week - week & 1/2.

We don't have a dead period so I can't really speak to what we do. We have summer work outs in helmets right up untill the start of our two weeks of doubles. Maybe give them a few days off before we put the full pads on.
I would run their b@LL$ off on the first day at the end of the second session just to send a msg for them to be ready for next year. Just work them hard those first few days do extra conditioning, maybe set time limits and add if they dont stuff like that. Give them plenty of warning before the dead period so they are ready.

I have a question...With your "dead period", I know that you cannot have "mandatory" practice, or anything like that, but can you have a CAMP, where you invite other local schools players, and charge money to attend, and just do agilities, ball catching, "fun" conditioning things, and BASICS that will help you get in shape for the season?
I know we have our Summer Camp, where its $35 to attend, and the first day we get everyone helmets, and go over the "basics" of the camp, (how the camp sessions will be, what we expect, etc...). Then starting the second day, we go to basic routes, basic run plays, (power, iso, toss), and work our way into 7-on-7 and things like that.
Or is ANY FOOTBALL off limits?

In the San Joaquin Section (about 200 football-playing high schools) - in the spring, many coaches conduct 'classes' thru the park and recs department, which anyone who signs-up can attend.
we are allowed ' Summer Conditioning' in which only balls can be used. No time limit. Plus, teams can go to one 'team camp' - where the team's gear is used. Any player, group of player, or teams of players, can attend unlimited 'individual camps' - where gear is provided by the camp. There is no such thing as 'dead period' in our section.
Each section is different and there are 11 sections in the state (really 9 if you don't count San Francisco and Oakland teams which are really leagues disguised as sections). The CIF does have blanket rules, but each section can have rules that supercede the CIF. The only rule that still applies is no equipment other than footballs between the end of one season and the start of the next (camps excluded). They specifically mention pads, sleds, etc. It is very common for schools to ignore this rule. We attend a 7-on-7 tournament every year and watch the home team run their line on the sled with arm shields, etc. It's not enforced . . . .at least no one from the section office sees it - and I doubt anyone would let them know.

In the Southern Section of the CIF. The only Coaches that can have contact with players are those that are coaching Summer teams that are vying for a National or World Title in Leagues that are recognized by U.S.A. Amature Sports. A few that are recognized are A.S.A Softball, Little League Baseball, American Legion Base Ball, AAU Sanctioned Sports, their is no Sanctioned Football Leagues that would allow contact durring the dead period.
