This job is a balls-to-the-walls, 100mph gig that requires us to be ever-compulsive in finding a winning edge. Unfortunately, that doesn't always translate into a healthy lifestyle when you are outside your 20's....
What are things you do to keep BALANCE, FITNESS, and overall SANITY to maintain your mental and physical healthy over the coaching long haul?

Replace meals with Skoal. Thats what I used to do to keep the weight off...haha Now I try to workout even if its just the tiniest bit in the morning before work. Also, eat small meals every two hours instead of 2 or 3 giant ones throughout the day. Been doing this for about a month and i'm losing weight and I feel terrific

I have found I have to workout 4-5 days a week first thing in the morning. If I wait until the afternoon I always find myself doing other things that are football related. As for meals I prepare all my meals first thing in the morning for the day while I am at school.

In the off season, I have to force myself to get away from the game and start enjoying "life" again by going to concerts, aggressively dating, read more (not FB....lol), bike riding, hiking, boating........just GETTING AWAY and building relationships OUTSIDE of football......to keep me sane.

It's always football season...sometimes just longer between games.
Balance is essential to a healthy life. Need family life, friends, and at least one hobby outside of the game. Eating sensibly, exercise (even just walking), watching alcohol/tobacco intake are crucial. And some kind of spirituality helps, too.

I got down to 290 by last fall. First time in about 5 years I was under three bills and still was pretty strong. Winter kicked my butt...I'm back up to about 315 and weak as heck.

i think coaches create there own health and family problems.
i believe most coaches have addictive personalities and the more is better approach is though to work end though less is more.

Lots of Rice. Lots of veggies. NO FAST FOOD. NO SODA. I've lost about 15 lbs. in the last month by cutting ALL soda's out of my diet, and eating out less than once a week.

I have to agree whole heartedly with you airman. Coaches are so addictive, they have that drive. Heck, to find that extra hobby away from football, I took up coaching track. And I find that driving me more for football.
It's almost funny because my wife knows exactly what to do when I need something to do, she puts on an old game tape and tells me to break it down...

My prescription is 1 winter break full of aggressive goose hunting followed by a good deal of full contact fly fishing. When you have a 16 inch Brown on the line it's funny how a good understanding of cover 2 doesn't help you land him.

good food, exercise, prayer, sunday school class , combine this with sex daily and I think football coaches would have a much higher level of health.
positive self talk tapes also help.

if i could get sex daily, then i wouldn't care what my body looked like!! haha, jk you have the sex life you choose. you want your woman daily, you are going to have to invest daily in the relationship outside of sex. talking/listening. you reap what you sew in a relationship. invest little, get little. invest a lot, get a lot.

The best way to have balance in your life for a football coach is to have DAUGHTERS. They could care less about the ins/outs of the game. They just care about their dad and they want their dad to care ALL about their stuff.

Great thread, I've always been heavy, but now that I'm getting a little older, I'm finding that sometimes practice wipes me out a little more than it used to. Being a big guy can affect your coaching in ways you don't really think of until they happen. My goal is to become more active during the off season (what there is of it!) and maintain the activity and exercise during the season. Gotta stay active, flexible and mobile!
Now if I can just work the "daily sex" idea into a conversation with my wife . . .

Great idea... I used to do that my freshman year of college - I just imagined the face of whatever prof. was pissing me off that week on it when I got tired and i found I could go another minute or two hard! :-)

Offseason can be a drag at times because I am around our guys for about 44 weeks of the year. We have very few multi sport guys anymore and the one that are multi sport are in track so they lift with us all year. So my time away is needed and I look forward to it. I have to have my familiy time esp as my kids are getting older. So we have our trips to the Colorado River every other week from April until Aug. Nothing better than being at the river with your family and friends out on the boats drinking a beer. The key guys on our staff we all go out to the river together (HC/OC, Me, and my right hand man DL coach)

try the goji stuff. it is worth the money (reasonably priced & lasts a while). i have more energy & not a sore in my joints & back after being up and moving all day. i've been able to maintain my weight for a while now. (could probably actually LOSE weight if i gave up another kind of juice .... but, not gonna happen... love those cold ones)

Look at the bottom of the page at the Arbonne add. They have a tremendous weight loss system. I started on it a month ago and have dropped a significant amount of weight. I do not step on a scale, ever, but i have gone from a 38 waist to a 34 (and even they are a little loose) in a month. If you want to order call my wife LOL, kidding, find a rep in your area or order on line directly!
and catoc, you are SO correct. I have a soon to be 3 year old. She could care less about football, she wants daddy to play with her. Matching Game, Barbies, Playdo, Coloring, puzzles, dolls, whatever, COUNT ME IN!!!!! I so much enjoy my time with her, she will probably never know how much she has changed my life for the better (wife should be included here too, but do not tell her!) I can't remember how I lived before I was married, and early marriage memories are fading because of life now with my little girl. That little grin and giggle when she beats me in the Matching Game damn near makes my heart melt! Best part is right now, loser has to give the winner a kiss, so the "pain" of losing is short lived for me.

We all know there is no magic pill or potion. Eating right, exercise, and having some healthy stress relieving diversion are the way to go. But a few months ago a started taking a product called Vibe manufactured by Eniva. Vibe is a liquid vitamin that is rapidly absorbed at nearly 100% efficiency. It was designed by a doctor of immunology. If you want more information check out thier website www.eniva.com or PM me. I distribute thier products as a part time gig and I can help you set things up.

I go to my martial arts workouts twice a week. Sometimes I work out with guys who are professional ultimate fighters and sometimes I do shadow boxing (muay thai kickboxing) at home.
I am so fortunate to live in Colorado so I'd go up there and enjoy many things such as hiking, fishing, camping, biking, jogging, etc.
Guys, if you want to lose weights - get this: You can eat anything you want but your meals must be small and eat 5 or 6 meals a day. Don't eat if you don't feel hungry. Drink lots of water. Eat fruits 2 or 3 times a day. Your diet should be 40 percent protein, 30 percent carbohydrate, and 30 percent fat. Take multivitamins and minerals daily plus essential fatty acid (EFA) that has Omega 3, Omega 6, and Omega 9. There are other information I can share but I think I'd stop here.
I am sure there are others who will disagree. That's alright. We can "debate" on anything except daily sex.
