I've read a couple of the platoon threads, trying to avoid rehashing old info, but I want to present my specific case and try to get some feedback...
Our HS enrollment = about 450
Expected varsity players = 38-39
We want to platoon as much as possible, platooned OL/DL only a couple years ago when he had a glut of linement. We are fortunate this year to have near perfect player dispersal, the right amount of each kind of kid, everything evenly spread out.
When we look at breaking the team up into an "O-only" and "D-only" group, we then look at our top 8-9 kids and say "Ok, they need to be able to play both sides", but only 2 (QB/CB and OG/SLB) will actually start both ways. The other 6-7 will start one way and back up on the other side. We were thinking we would simply lable those 2 ways kids as having a "primary" side of the ball, and a "secondary" side.
So we want to have two squads practicing simultaneiously, an O at one end and a D at the other, and run skelly and inside run and team against eachother. We even have enough coaches to do it.
The question for us becomes, how would you guys schedule practice so that those "2-way" kids know thier assignments on both sides....Johnny Studarm's primary spot is QB, so he does his Indy's and Aglilities and assignment periods as a QB, etc etc, but while he's doing that, he's missing the DB assignment time. He's such a great athlete, he can miss agilities, but when does he get the assignment stuff?
We thought about doing Monday as everyone goes to thier primary position, and Tuesday you spend maybe 45 minutes at your secondary side of the ball, but, under that scenario, Johnny Studarm goes to see the DB's on tuesday and they did all thier assignment stuff during Monday with the 1-way kids and primary Defense kids....do you Fully Re-do all the assignmnet stuff just for Johnny Studarm? Does he need to get it outside of practice, before or after? Do you stagger O & D "assignment/install" periods, like O starts with Install while D does aggilities and technique, then flip them, so all 2-way kids get thier O assignments, then go get thier D, then assume the side of the ball they are primary? (now you've got 1-way kids who are doing agilities while the other side of the ball and all 2-way kids are diong the assignment time, so you only have like 15 of them)
I would love to see how some of you break down the practice if you have 6-8 studs who need to at least practice both ways, even if they only start 1-way and you platoon, without having too much "repeating" for the one way kids.
