Being my first year as just a lowly assistant pee-on O'line coach, i'm feeling pretty darn good. In fact, whats funny is I haven't felt so proud of myself and a team since way back in my playing days. Maybe I'm just jaded by the success we've had on the field. But this team was 3-8 last season, and we turned 'er around to 8-3 and #2 in our league (losing to only the #2, and #3 teams in the state for 2A). I would like to think I brought about a little of the success but its hard to pat myself on the back when the kids I'm coaching are so good at that fundamental skill of listening. This season I brought in an outside zone concept and really worked on the fundamentals with the kids. We run mostly 1 and 2 back stuff, out of trips, ghost, and I-formation. ALL season long we worked on keeping our shoulders square, moving our feet through a block, and staying at a low pad level.
When I started this gig, I really thought it was going to be more complicated. This school i'm coaching at is actually hosting a playoff game for the first time in probably 20 years. I'm having more fun doing this than i've had in the last 6 years working as a computer geek.
I only have really one thing to say to all the other coaches here who didn't make it into a post-season, I REALLLY understand how tough it is when things don't go right, especially after all the hours you put into it, mentally, physically, and the toll it takes on your families. I know now from experience how stressful it can be. I also know that when my season is over i'm taking a vacation because I need a little "me" time.
This site has helped me tremendously as a coach, not only with the x's and o's stuff, but also on how to handle these kids outside of football. Thanks a bunch to all the great posters here.
