Where do you coaches find your video guys? Not just to film but to edit and such at the high school level. How much do you pay them or compensate them? Reliability is huge for this so how do you make sure they're reliable?

Our video guy is as dedicated as it gets. (He is also a new member of this board). He does the filming, makes 3 copies of the game film on the way home from games (with his elaborate mobile video booth).
Makes copies onto DVD for the HC for cut ups. Produces his own highlight film at the end of the year.
His compensation is ZILCH. Not a dime, he may get a shirt and a hat if he is lucky as wll as access to the locker room. He may get a thank you and a hand shake but that's about it.
He also drove 6 hours last year to meet an opposing staff for game film the week of the State Finals, not to mention the quality of his video are OUTSTANDING.
Dedication to the max--every school wishes they could have a film guy like slowride.

I'm blushing. Thanks for the praise HOTO. And if I hadn't had such good company that 6 hour drive (one way) would have been alot longer. Filming for HS football can be a pain in the butt, and the rewards are small, but that Championship Ring sure does look good when I pull it out.

Former coach that teaches does our scouting (there is no film exchange here) Player's parent whos into football (former volunteers) film the games (pressbox) Freshmen coach may volunteer for endzone film
One of the coaches (me) takes the Vars & Soph film after game night, duplicates it, distributes them, and cuts them up for player review.
At the lower levels, we would get a student to film.

Most teams in our area use either the local cable access folks or the AV dept from the school. They seem to be the places video enthusiest will be. We pay about $75 a game. But our staff does the actual weekly breakdown and cutups for coaches and players.

I do it for our staff. I have a pretty awkward setup, but I know how to work it. I have 1 DVD recorder which the first run of the video copies to. Then I have 3 dual deck VCRs. On Saturday's I'll use one for our stuff, one for opponent tape A and the other for tape B. On my TV I have a switcher so I can watch whichever I want.
I have a secondary setup for transferring Hi-8 video onto VHS.
It's a dinosaur, but it works.

Oh yeah, I don't get paid for it. I do it because I want it done right.
