Everybody probably has some secret to breaking in a new football for game day. My assistant who has coached for many years, suggested throwing them in the dryer for about 30 seconds. He said he did it when he was first coaching.
So, I tried it. And to be honest, it felt more tacky and the seams really seemed to stick out. Very easy to grip. Now, it may have done nothing, in actuality, but I am sold.
Didn't know if anyone else did this.

i brush 'em down first. then, take slightly moist towel (slightly, very slightly) and rub 'em once over. then, throw 'em dryer with dry towels (to keep from banging on the metal on inside of our industrial strength driers). the dry towels also act to rub the 'film' off the ball (as does the brushing and initial rub-down.
... also, this is done when they are not completely aired up, as in a ball that you can tell needs more air when you grip/squeeze it. don't like fully aired balls bouncing around too much.

How about just using them? Use them the week before the game so the QBs get used to them. When i was in high school my coach gave me 3 balls at the start of the summer and said, break them in for the first game. We'd always break a few balls in during the season and use them for game balls.

I am interested in a method to "recondition" the balls. We are throwing the GST and they are holding up better then the standard 1005 ball, but they just get so slippery. Is there a die hard method for making them new again?

the soft brush is one great way, got that from the wilson ball rep at a clinic. Soft bristle brush and it removes all particles and buildup in the surface of the ball, allowing it to become tacky again. i havent heard about using a dryer, i might wanna give that a shot though...

Anyone is it only 30 sec or do I put the balls in the dryer for the whole cycle?

very short amount of time..I'd assume they may pop if you leave them in to long.

For your GST users, this is a great way to create a very tacky, throwable, catchable, ball.
Select two or three balls that have been used for quite a while. We have our kickers break brand new balls in by kicking them in practice. Once the "orange" color has faded out, take Meltonian Leather Balm and completely cover the ball. Let them sit and dry for about 15 minutes as the balm soaks in. Rub them out with a dry towell until all the residue is gone. Let them sit over night and in the morning they are very tacky. The QB's love the way the balls feels as do the receivers.
It is week six of our season and we are still using the same four game balls from week one. We just re-apply the balm on Thursday nights before the game. We have four more that our kickers are beating up and we will use them the last three games.

Is there a die hard method for making them new again? I learned to use Saddle Soap (look near shoe dept.) that acts as a leather conditioner. It is especially good when balls get wet. Get a damp cloth and rub just a little bit in. Let them dry overnight and then get any excess off with a dry towel the next day.

MELTONIAN LEATHER BALM . . .
I went to about four different places today - two of them dedicated cobblers and no one has heard of this around here - one guy told me to try saddle soap as he thought it sounded like the same thing. Anybody try that before?

coach you can have your players rub their hands together, (aka warming them up) this makes the surface of the palms slighty tacky as well...try it, just remember to wipe off your hands each time...

We usually rub them down with shaving cream and place under the drier...seems to work great for new & used balls.......

It turned real cold here today and we had trouble throwing and catching it. Do the afore mentioned techniques help with a cold, hard ball? What do you guys do when it gets really cold?
