I have watched several bowl games and it seems to me that a number of helmets have been coming off during the game. I notice it when a pile of players get together.
I have seen this several times this bowl season. I am wondering if players are tugging on it in the pile or if they are like the pros and not wearing properly fit helmets.
I have always been under the assumption a well fit helmet will stay on when the chin strap gets unbuckled.

If they gave them a penalty for it they wouldn't be flying off! I believe this is a fad that the NFL and NCAA should end by making it a penalty, especially with the emphasis on head injuries.

I was kind of wondering this myself. I've never seen a helmet come off because of a hard hit or a pile up in a high school game, yet it happens all the time at the D1 and NFL levels.

I notice that the guys with those long dreads have a problem keeping their helmets on quite a bit. But I agree with you guys, I rarely see a helmet pop off in a high school game. I remember one time mine almost came off when I really got stuck on an option, right under the chin. The chin strap went up to my nose but never came off. I don't know how these guys get their helmets knocked off. At the same time, why don't half these guys wear mouth guards? As big and as fast as these guys fly around and you don't wear a mouth guard. Thats crazy/stupid.

I know we had some problems with the revolution helmets coming off in practice and games the last few years. It just seemed to be the revolutions that popped off. I don't know if it's some kind of side effect of the design of the helmet to disperse the energy from a hit or what. I know some of ours cracked on the jaw part and the rep said they would do that because of the way they were designed, almost like how race cars disintegrate so the energy of the hit is lessened. He could have been blowing smoke up our a$$ but who knows.
I can also see it having to do with the hair since it does not seem with that amount of hair that the helmet would fit right.
The mouth piece thing baffles me too. I could never play with out one, I would be afraid of bitting my tongue off or something in my mouth, not to mention your teeth slamming into each other.

I had a couple kids that constantly chewed their mouth pieces. I actually sat a kid because he chewed through 2 pieces in one week.

Players purposely wear their straps loose...they want those helmets off. Why?
Marketing
They get their mug shot on TV. It's the reason Emmitt Smith always took off his helmet after a TouchDown. He knew the cameras would be on him...and if you're going to do a commercial, you're going to need people to know your face.
"Hmmm, I got to get my face on TV...taking off my helmet is illegal...I have an idea!!"
How many times do you see a sportscenter highlight of a helmet flying off and somebody just finishing th eplay without a helmet?
Watch how long it takes some guys to put their helmets back on too.

back in the 1990's it was no uncommon for players to take off their helmets when they scored a touch down and taunt people as well. the ncaa cracked down on it. this was esay cause people were doing it to draw attension to themselves.
the current issue where helmets are coming off in the pile is more of a safety issue.
I also noticed how the horse collar tackle is starting to make it into the college level.

It sure seems as though the helmets don't fit very well. It won't take long to get coaches' attention if a player is severly injured as a result of a helmet that wasn't properly fitted. A good starting place would be a haircut before helmet fitting, but I suppose that would violate someone's civil rights.

On much of the same note did anyone notice the number of players wearing earrings under their helmets. Seen it in the NFL, bit has trickled down into college. That seems to be pretty dangerous combined with the helmet problems.
I believe that DeSean Jackson had one ripped from his ear after his touchdown vs. Air Force.

On a side note, do you guys have problems with chinstraps? It seems like we can't go through a game anymore without chinstraps breaking. I hate those plastic things.

never thought I would use Ricky Williams as a positive example, but he never took off his helmet in college. He even did post game interviews with it on. I think he even slept with it on.

Speaking of helmets coming off...
From last night's GMAC Bowl. This should have been a penalty. Hope the punt returner is ok today.

I don't even think that its that they don't fit, I think its that they don't buckle them up tight half the time. Maybe thats what you mean by not fitting, but a lot of times they don't buckle them as tight as they should or even buckle all 4 snaps.

Not a mechanical engineer, nor a biophysicist, but I would think that is actually a GOOD thing. The energy was transfered to the HELMET and not the head, right?

Maybe thats what you mean by not fitting, but a lot of times they don't buckle them as tight as they should or even buckle all 4 snaps. I agree with this 100%. We had a few issues with kids not buckling their helmets tight because it was "cool" that college and NFL players didn't do it either.
