Ok guys (and tog)
Looking for some great Hank Stahm-isms here. Hank had a great way of ridiculing the refs without actually being blatant about it. Give it a go:
Our HC this year to our side judge: "Is that a pacifier or a whistle in your mouth?"

Ok guys (and tog) Looking for some great Hank Stahm-isms here. Hank had a great way of ridiculing the refs without actually being blatant about it. Give it a go: Our HC this year to our side judge: "Is that a pacifier or a whistle in your mouth?" I treat the refs how I would want to be treated. I would not want to be ridiculed, so I do not ridicule. you can spend your time complaining to the refs or you can spend your time coaching. I know if I were a ref, I would not tolerate the abuse some coaches give. those coaches woudl be coaching from the locker room. when I do talk to a ref, it is usually a rules issue. I talk to the refs ahead of times about tirck plays and double passes.

I was an assistant lacrosse coach a few years ago and the HC told the ref "next time you F-me like that, use vaseline. It won't hurt so bad"!!! a laughed my butt off on the sidelines for the next ten minutes.

I asked a ref at an away game where we just kept getting hammered by his calls: "What number is your son out there?" I asked another ref what year he graduated from that school.
But guys 99% of the time I lay off the refs. I treat them like the professionals they are. I have been asked by the local officials association to come speak at thier preseason meetings so I think the majority respect me the way I respect them.

One game the refs were allowing alot of extra curriculars after the play. One of our kids got clipped behind the play so i started grilling the ref on it. He said "if something happens behind the play I can't throw a flag on it." So I told him that I was going to stand behind the LOS all game and yell at him and no matter what I said it wasn't a flag. Needless to say, he threw a flag on me right then. Apparently I wasn't behind the play

I use to referee, and a coach was ripping me hard. I kindly threw a flag and kicked him out of the game, after warning him twice. The referees jobs are toe referee and enforece the rules, and your job is to coach. SO JUST DO YOUR JOB AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. If you have a problem just hammer the crew after the game on the ratings cards. Thats what we do as a staff Sunday when we rate them. If they totally blew a call. We rate the entire crew horribly, and they won't be hred back.

"Are you an Alumni of the school we're playing,"
and one time AFTER a game, I a chased down the refs and told them they were the absolute sh*ts."

sad thing is most h.s. coaches do not even know the real rules of football. if they did, they could use them to their advantage.
I always find coaches who rip the officals to have double standards.
it is okay for the football coach to belittle, cuss and treat a offical poorly but if a kid does that to the coach, all h.e.l.l. breaks loose.
it is sort of like bobby knight, he demands his players respect everyone and he respects no one.

I totally agree with leaving the refs alone,
but I heard a guy once
HC= That was a horrible call. REF= One more word and you're gone coach. HC= Can I get thrown out for what I'm thinking.... because I think you F#$%ing suck.
Not sure what happened after that, but not too tough to figure out.

This is sort of off the topic but about refs.
During a JV game one of our coaches asked the official on our sideline why he didn't make a particular call.
The ref replied "It's not my call."
Coach then asked, "Well who should have made the call"
The ref said, "The back judge."
Our coach then said, "Where is he at so I can talk to him?"
The ref's finally reply, "Coach, we don't have one this game."

We have a crisis in our section - there is a serious shortage of officials. We are a D1 school and we get guys calling their first game ever - at least a few games per year. It used to be that you had to have years of experience before you could call a D1 varsity game. The one thing that we count-on every game - that the officiating will be horrible.
And the attitude is what has really degraded. Arrogant, non-communicative, and short tempered seems to describe this new breed. Most of these guys do absolutely nothing to improve. We fill out rating cards - and send film to the league office to highlight missed calls, but we might as well do nothing. If we get three well officiated games per year, we are blessed.
I think officials need to be accountable for their work. It has certainly been proven that they are not accountable to the kids, themselves - or the section. Sometimes it seems that the only accountability the officials have is to the coaches - who get on them. I have offered to give officials film of the game so they could review their work multiple times. You would think one might take me up on my offer, but it has never happened. Instead they are offended. The worst part of coaches getting after officials is that the kids see it - and pick up on it - it affects their attitude.
I coached with one guy in college who was really foul. He once told an official that 'the best part of you ran down your mommy's crack'. Another time he called an official an 'abortion'. He would also double talk. He would say things like, 'well fargo, you shoot hole, how did you rip from a holly grail, mother rocker'. His real talent was to say it just loud enough that the official could hear him talking, but could not make out the words. 'What did you say?' was the typical reply. When he repeated his words, they didn't know what to do.

Sad is that sometimes refs don't know the High School rules and only know pro football rules. It goes both ways to me.

had a buddy ask a ref, "how can you sleep at nite when your f*cking kids?"
never really knew if he ment the ref couldn't sleep because he felt bad for his officiating or because he was "indisposed"

My defensive coordinator was after the refs in a JV game back in the early 90s and the white hat finally had enough and said, "Coach, do you want to go 15?" My defensive coordinator replied, "You wouldn't last 15 rounds, I'd knock your ass out in the first round." We got the flag. Imagine.

Coach: "Ref, you stink!" Ref (after marching off 15-yard Unsportsmanlike penalty): "How do I smell from here?" It goes both ways.

Airman, I try and be professional at all times to refs, but maybe it's our location we have BAD refs and plenty who are not well versed in NFHS rules. So there are some times when I will have a good convo with the ref. Some times I act out, to make the kids feel like coach is doing a little extra, so we need to step it up.
Then I have done my Bobby Knight impression with my head sets.

Some of you descibe the crap you say to refs in the same posts about how they can't find officials. No sh*t. Who wants to be abused all night for small change. Most coaches I know scream and yell about holding calls they have no way of knowing the validity of until films. They also ignore any bad calls in their favor and go nuts when they think one goes against them. In 30 years plenty of times I yelled at officials and wa sure I was right and the next day saw I was dead wrong. Of course, no one bothers to find the refs and tell them they were right. Many coaches are as bad as Pop Warner parents. They believe in two immutable laws. 1). The refs are screwing us 2). The other team plays dirty and the other side thinks the same thing.

I think we as coaches tend to allow ourselved to feel that a bad call is ripping apart our chances to get something out of the hardwork we have put in as a team.. You work all week with very long hours.. and then some jerk blows a call.. But.. they are human too.. people make mistakes.. But, I have had guys who were just out for us.. and to prove a point made some crap calls.. not maybe that there wasnt anything there.. but calls that maybe he shouldnt have called.. Sometimes calls can change a game around and you end up losing it close.. those are the ones that really hurt.. but.. I guess its not life or death.. We were tied with our district champs this year.. they went down and threw a long pass and our guy picked it off.. him and the receiver fell to the ground.. He said he heard white ball.. but the receiver ripped the ball away on the ground.. the ball should have already been dead.. they gave it to them.. they ended up with it on the 20.. they scored.. that should have been out ball.. with a chance to go down and take the lead.. but.. it didnt work out that way.. probably the blown coverage on that next play.. or the fumble to give them the ball on out 10 earlier in the game were more to blame.. but.. you never know what would have happened if the right call was made..

"If you had one more eye you'd be a cyclops"
always gets a laugh from them
i have also pulled an official to me and said the following
"my fans expect me to argue this call, i beleive it was right, and you made the right call against us, do me a favor point at me and yell at me a little so they think i am doing my job"
officials have a tough job, i try to leave the alone unless this miss something repeatedly, or blatant

I think its apart of the game. The refs no going into it that they are going to take some abuse from coaches, players and fans. Giving it to a ref I have no problem with, unless it gets to the point where you are bilittling the refs unceromoniously. But then again, thats why the refs have the power to toss your ass if you go to far! Yell all you want but you might find yourself listening to the game from the lockerroom.
