Coaches-
What is your process and order of importance for your defense to scout about a team every week? What areas do you look at?why? Your input is always appreciated and allows us all to gain from your knowledge.
How do you scout an opponents offense?

First things first....
What plays do they run at high volumes? What are plays they are really good at (big plays)? What formations do they like running? What is their way to adjust to pressure / Stacking the box? What is their "security blanket" play? What do they revert to in the red zone? What DON'T they do well? Who is their BEST player and why? Who is their WORST player and why?
When we answer those questions, we can start branching the plays with the formations with the field position. This is what will be distributed / filtered to the players.

When I watch an opposing I always write down all the plays that they run. I put them into a excel spreadsheet so later I can group them by formation, d&d, hash, player, etc. I look for the obvious tendencies. I also chart the defenses alignment, and then reaction to every play to see if anything sticks out. If you do this as a staff it actually goes pretty quickly and gives you valuable information.
After I break them down as a team I work on the individuals. This is something I like to do by myself, and I get very detailed. I watch the offense again focusing on each position, and take notes on every play.
After all the information is gathered I turn this into a 5 page scouting report. 1 page basic info/stats 1 page position by position breakdown 1 page scout run plays 1 page tendencies 1 page game plan vs. opponent

how much do you look at their protection schemes? DOes it matter? how does thier protections influence your blitzes and stunts? personally, I think it makes a HUGE difference. Sometimes the protection changes by formation or personnel groups. When we set up our 'pressure packages' (blitzes/stunts/coverages), we determine WHAT we are going to attack, then HOW we are going to attack it. No point in just sending guys just to be sending guys - a lot of times you could be sending them AWAY from the play...have to work efficient IMO A lot of the times, based on protections we've seen, we have had the most success sending four to a side and a few times we found a matchup we liked and sent two to a gap.

when putting together the report for our dc, the first thing he wants are the formations that the opponent runs, from highest percentage to lowest. then he wants how much they run or pass from the formation. next is where they are running the play to out of the formation (a certain player, side of the field, behind certain lineman, etc.). we also want to know if they flip their line.
from their he puts together the adjustments and stunts to run to disrupt what they do best out of those formations.
