Have any of you heard of a high school team giving a team the whole week off during a bye week. No practice... Just have players and coaches get away from each other for one week and come back the following week. May have merit.. especially at this point in the year. Love to hear if anyone has has a team do this.

Nope, never heard of it and can't see it as a good idea. Frankly, it sounds more like a coach who wants time off from his players and his job. We give a few days off, but not a whole week.

Love to hear if anyone has has a team do this. Joe, I know how tempting it is but I wouldn't do it. I'd worry that some of the kids might decide that the time off is nice and that they've had enough football for this year. We're in the same boat as you. We have a bye next week before the playoffs but we won't even know for sure that we're in the playoffs. Because games are still being played it's tough to say how the power points will shake out, where we'll be seeded, and who (or if) we'll play so we can't really prep for an opponent. In addition, we're near the end of the marking period so a lot of kids are running around making up class work. Here's what we're going to do. We're going to practice on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday with an emphasis on special teams, conditioning, and working on fundamentals that need improvement. Only the Wednesday practice will be padded. We want to keep them engaged and focused and work on getting better. We're not planning to drag it out or beat them to death, just keep them involved.

Never had a bye week before, but fantom's plan seems very solid to me.

We had one this year for the first time. We gave them Monday and Friday off. It was the week before a big conference game. Helped us bc we were able to put in some new stuff we normally wouldn't with just a week. Hurt us bc the game was too fast at first and our tackling was poor. We came back to win 38-34

I would never do the whole week. Could it work? Of course.
What we do during our bye week is take the Saturday off after our previous Friday night game. Usually we lift and watch film. On Monday, we will lift and watch film. We practice pretty normal on Tuesday-Thursday and usually try to focus on correcting our own mistakes and working on fundamentals more than scheming for our next opponent. This year on the Friday we had off we just did our normal Saturday lift and took that Saturday off.
So, we limited the hours and days, but didn't take anything off completely. We also sat athletes who were banged up or injured.

I think I heard that Tulane's coach did that this year. I've never heard of a HS coach doing it though.
