I've been doing my entire coaching career, but I'm the only one on our staff that does it. The rest of the staff is more of a helmet tapper.
I'm all for the helmet tap as a sign of a good job, but nothing carries a good job like the butt slap.
Just have to remember not to coach volleyball with that philosophy.
Anyone else out there still use it?

All the time!!!! and I agree make sure you only use it in your male sports. lol!!! serious note here I actually caught myself before executing an excited "butt slap" on our anchor for our girls 4x400 relay that won district. She ran a heck of a leg to come from behind and win. I was a second year coach and had only coached boys but the girls coach asked me to take over the relay teams for the girls and was so used to the butt slap that I was in motion when my brain kicked in. Turned into an awkward looking "upper cut fist pump" that looked ridiculous but hey its better than the alternative lol!!! So if you coach girls in any way then you should prob not practice the butt slap on male athletes so that it is not a habit!

I generally give the helmet tap for a good play and a butt slap for a GREAT play.

No. Not this time of year. Your hand gets soaked with butt sweat-nasty.

I made a big show last week of running into the team huddle and giving a pulling guard a butt slap for a great trap block, I just made sure to call 'no homo'.

Low five for me most of the times or a grab the chest plate pull and shove. Never did the butt slap and as a player I hated the helmet slap. Most of time my head was ringing a little so getting hit in the head thing sucked

I do it on occassion, but I've turned it into more of a side fist on the butt or hip.
Of course for a great play, you're getting a jumping back bump.

I keep a practice plan or game plan rolled up, it makes for a good butt slapper, other than that helmet tap (especially with my wedding ring to get a good sound)

Yeah, I'm that old. I still pop the helmet too. The key with either to get the desired effect is to buggy whip the wrist. For the helmet, the effect comes not from blunt force but the sound effect ringing in the ears.

You are going to hell dubber and just want some of us for company! LOL!! Girls: "Coach, why do we spend so much time stretching?" Me: "Injury prevention." Girls: "But shouldn't we eventually actually use a volleyball?" Me: "Don't question my methods....alright everybody, downward dog."

No butt slap here. I've coached girls, but that's not why. When I played, we had a coach who loved to do it. I avoided him like the plague when I did something well. He's a nice guy, but I have no need for that move.
