Just curious, how does your state structure its playoffs?
Here in Lousiana, 32 teams from each classification make it (classes are decided by enrollment). The District Champion is given an automatic bid, and then all of the remaining slots are filled by a power point system. The brackets are then seeded by that system.

Coach,
Here in New York our classifications are also determined by enrollement (5 classes: Class AA, A, B, C, D). The state is then divided into 11 sections. But only 9 of the 11 sections participate in the state championship tournament. Long Island and New York City teams do not particpate in the state tournament and have thier ownchampionship. Each section as one representative or sectional champion for a total of 8 teams (two of the smaller sections is combined) for the regionals and the final playoff tournament. Hope this makes sense.

in ohio 6 divisions largest to biggest....then harbin ratings rank schools with 4 regions in each diuvision....harbins are points based on what size school you beat and who they beat...the bigger and better the school, the more harbin points, som if youre div 4 and can beat a decent div 1 team good news for you lots of pts.....then 8 teams from each region make playoffs(32 each div total), they play to regional champ and then regional champs playoff in final four and to champ game.

In Iowa, 6 classes, determined by enrollment (8-man, A, 1A, 2A, 3A & 4A). In A - 3A there are 8 districts. Top two teams in each district qualify for the playoffs after a 9-game regular season. In 4A they also take 16, based on a point system.

Illinois has 8 classes, need at least 5-4 record to get in, 32 in each class, 4 seeded quadrants in each class.

In Utah, there are 5 Classifications (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A : 5 is the biggest), and they each have different "Regions" (conferences). Then there is a 16 team playoff at the end, with each region getting the same # of teams in the tournament. (some classes only have 3 regions, so they rotate the "odd region" each year.
So there are 5 state-champs every year

Minnesota: 5 classes + 9-man so 6 levels. Each level has 8 sections. A maximum of 8 teams in each section make the playoffs. Some sections have more than 8 teams and some have fewer. If more than 8 teams in a section then the top 8 seeds are in and the others are not. If there are less than 8 then the top seed or seeds get a 1st round bye. Seeds are awards however the section wants to determine it. Ours uses a point system. Some use W-L record. The winner of each section gets a trophy and a trip to the state quarterfinals. The semi finals and finals are all played in the Metrodome. Classes and sections are reconfigured every 2 years (some MN guy tell me if this is wrong because I know there are some exceptions).

In Wisconsin there are 7 divisions. After the regular season the top 192 teams (basically all teams with a .500 conference record) qualify for the playoffs and are then broken up by enrollment. It can be controversial at times, I know in recent years top D2 teams end up being in D3 for the playoffs.

In Kansas there are seven divisions - 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2-1A, 8-Man I, and 8-Man II. After a 9 game regular season with district play the top two from each district go to the playoffs. That's 16 teams in 5A and 6A, 32 teams in 4A, 3A, 2-1A, and each of the 8-man divisions
