Coaches,
How much JV time or reps do you give your kids during a week? We have had a discussion on our staff of giving the JV a significant amount of reps during the week, not equal to varisty but not far behind. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

That sounds good to me... we try and give them about the same or close to it as possible. we go pretty fast so that gives us and advantage. we don't stop to coach during inside run or team period. its done in the film room/meetings. we believe we are only as good as our JV.

We are in a different situation, since our players play both offense and defense. When the varsity is on offense, the JV is on defense and vice versa. There are occasionally times when we have to be a little creative with what the JVs are doing because the number of coaches available is more limited since we're using some offensive and defensive coaches during some team periods (pass skelly for example). Once the season begins, it's a little different as well. Our JVs go out on Mondays while the varsity watches film, so we only send a few coaches out and they do a lot of their special teams for the week until everyone comes out. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are pretty normal, and they play on Thursday, so not a practice issue.

We are required to have 2 completely unique teams for varsity & JV. During indy time everybody works in their position groups together, then when it's team time we split into two separate teams. It's great for the JV's as far as amount of reps but I don't like the fact that we can't bring up a kid during the season if we need to.

We work it almost exactly like new pride. While V is on O jV is on D. So they get a pretty good amount of time. Only time the get shafted is like it was on our 1st intra squad scrimmage Wednesday. We were going good on good and only a few JV players got in.

Our JVs (9-10) practice separately from Varsity (11-12).
Allows them to progress at their own rate, don't take reps away from Varsity, and gives their coaches "ownership" of the team.
Also during competitive season they play on a different night which would require adjustments if we were to practice together.
And no way would we have Freshman practicing with-against Juniors and Seniors.

I would like to do it like blb, with JVs separate. I have done it that way in the past and like it, we just aren't quite in the position with staff to be able to do it.

Varsity HC Offensive Backs and LBers, OC Varsity OL-DL, DC Varsity WR-DBs, STs JV HC Offensive Backs and LBers, OC JV OL-DL, DC JV WR-DBs, STs During Two-a-days morning practice is Offense, afternoon is Defense. More to it than than this but that's the basics.

I wish that I spent as much time with JV as varsity but I do not. I do not have a JV team period either. With that said, our JV kids get the same amount of INDY time as varsity. They learn everything the older kids do. They have the opportunity to be involved as much as they want. The cream rises to the top IMO.
Sadly, I watch the same young kids get in over and over again while other kids hide in the back row of a drill or team period and get nothing out of it. During 7-7 the other day, we had 30 kids in the drill and had two offenses vs our first defense so that we could work get a lot of reps in. But again, I witnessed 7-8 kids that did not run a single pattern.
When parents ask this question, I say, show and attend practice and watch your son.
With all this said, we do spend about 45 mins on Thursday with them as a preface for them, too, all by themselves.

Let the varsity HC make the decision.
