how many of you guys have gotten play ideas faxed in from "concerned fans"? or what other kind of funny things have you heard about calling plays?

along with that
how many times does the play selection (however strange it may be) involve the kid of the "concerned fan"?

Every week.
Boosters who are intent on "selling" 'Be the Head Coach for a play" offers for games. Parents that insist that Cover 3 is NOT 8 guys in the box or that Cover 2 versus double-tight-double-wing is only 7 guys playing the run. Parents that believe there is a defense out there that can defend everything. Parents that wonder why we don't have 3 to 4 deep in quality quarterbacks throughout the program. You guys know MY story (this year....).

speak 'o the devil.... right after I posted that, I got a "forwarded email from a 'concerned fan' ".... hope you don't mind me being so "candid" about this season...
David Could you please forward this email to the football program- HC etc? Team is o-2 so far. Both games could have been won easily.Special team mistakes- a fumbled punt return that NS recovered for a TD.and a missed field goal cost you that win. Also the panicing as time ran out - you don't need to air it out and get it intercepted if you have a couple of minutes left- a 10 yd first down or out of bounds run will stop the clock also. Now to the game last night. The swing pass did not work- why did you keep trying it?I hate to be critical but you and the coaching staff need to review your play calling -what worked what didn'.t You owe it to the players to call the best play for each situation and right now I give you a C- You wasted two time outs early in the second half why? You needed them later and they were gone! The pitch out to tailback worked well. the one short pass worked well. What about slant passes across the middle? WHS dbacks were playing off our wide receivers what about a quick pass to them? Does the tailback always have to run sweeps what about him picking holes in the line more- WHS runner got two touchdowns up the middle by breaking tackles. Which means your defense needs to review the basics of tackling- hit them low etc.If QB doesn't mind running the ball more, you could run the option sometimes. Tailback's failed attempt to get the 2point conversion could have worked if he had tried to go in the north direction sooner but he'll learn as the season goes- maybe he was too tired? The gutsy 4th quarter tdown pass to tailback was a beauty! The guy I was sitting with was way more critical of the coaches than I have been here. I know you guys are doing your best but you gotta step it up You lost two good chances to be 2-0 the rest of the season does't get any easier. Keep working hard and smarter and this could still be a successfull year. AndI know it's not all about winning. It's about having fun about character development and getting a good education These things will always be more important that winning. I hope you will consider some of my ideas. If you want I will send an email afer each game.Gotta go. Arm chair Dave

I remember a session with Chris Doyle, S&C coach at Iowa, he talked about how he and Ferentz get along. He said, "I specialize in strength & conditioning and maintain a relationship with the players. Coach Ferentz is a specialist in what he does....X's & O's / win football games. For an outsider to come in and tell me how to run our strength program or offer ideas, would be like me, walking over to Kirk on the sidelines and say, 'Y'know, I've got this really neat idea about your zone play...and I think you oughta do THIS...' It shows disrespect for our craft." Much like, you being a gym teacher (or whatever) wouldn't email a fan at his job as a CPA and say, "I really didn't like how you handled that audit last week, this is what I would've done different". I really believe the Ron Jaworksis and Kirk Herbstreits have led people to believe that winning games is as easy as just the right play call. I am certainly open to suggestions and comments and questions from our fanbase. We host a Sunday night dinner every weekend where we go over the film with the fans. We field questions. I like it, it helps develop repoire with them and you can head off any enmity, by expressing the concerns we coaches face every week/ every game, and you can tell them "we called this play because of X,Y, & Z"....

Coach,
I know you work hard on your posts, but this could have EASILY been a better post if you had just taken some time to structure and word things a little differently. I mean, come on...the accountant analogy was a bit trite, don't you think? Also, you really can't hold my attention for more than a few seconds. I mean, the readers of this board deserve a better effort out of you on this stuff. You should really use a bit more hyperbole in your writing. Also, try quoting some famous authors. I mean, when you keep writing on the same topic over and over again and you know it's not working, why can't you go to a new topic? Also, you better review the fundamentals of grammar.
Sorry, I didn't mean to be critical. I know this isn't a creative writing seminar. I know it's about sharing information and having fun...but I just think you should sit down and think about things a little more before you write them.
If you'd like me to comment like this on every one of your posts, you just let me know. The guy reading over my shoulder is even more critical of your writing than I am!!
: )
What a buch of crap, coach. I hope you found this amusing.

ever wonder why people don't walk into the or and say "hey doc, i think you should make that incision a little to the left"?
they have no peoblem telling us how to do our job though, go figure.
on a related note. the last place i was is an inner city all black school. the head coach , a black guy, had hired a bunch of white guys when he got the job. (he only wnated to hire the best people for the job) well we struggle early and every friday nite the calls from the stands were "sell out and "uncle tom" and "you had to hier a bunch of white folk to do your job" you get the idea. later we start winning and winning big and would you belive it, eveeryone loves the white guys. people are nuts and winning cures everyhting.
Holla

Our fans don't spell that well, so they just scream from the stands. How about these, I've had a parent come up and say we throw the ball too much, next game a parent comes up and says we run too much,we should have thrown more, of course me pointing out the 40-50 mph winds and blowing dirt were a problem and that the starting QB was out with a injured shoulder had no impact. Or the mother after a game who complained that I should have played her son on offense because he is Gods gift to the game, me pointing out that HE removed HIMSELF from pre game warmups because his leg was bothering him (he had been out most of the season for a BROKEN leg and this was his first game back) didn't faze her either. This on a 10-1 football team, the one loss showed that our coaching staff were morons, the 10 wins were because of superior parenting and superior gentics.

I had to run someone out of the press box during a game this year. The best part is that we were up by 20+ w/ under 2 minutes left.

Oh...the fans always know more than the coach. Its classic. I was watching a game this year, two bad high school teams for sure, but one was a rookie head coach who actually is getting it done and turning it around at his school and the other is what i would call "an improving coach and program" but the coach is the schools "all time winningest head coach"...this teams offense set the school record for points scored and graduated its all time leading rusher in the process....but as i watched the game...and yes, was pained at times by sloppy play and coaching...still, there was no doubt about it, the search for the next head coach is over...there were the two old guys to my left...sort of like the two old guys that sat up top in the muppets and made those comments....anyhow, there was the band geeks "they have no passing game", and then the best part...two kids that had to be 7 or 8 years old just ripping the coach and his play calling...as a coach and a fan, i have learned that 99% of the folks sitting in the stands are completely clueless...as the game progressed the one team was running out the clock...there was a soccer mom who somehow ended up at the game..."why do they keep running up the middle, it obviously isnt working"...sigh.
Anyhow, In one of my best seasons as a coach, we averaged 38 ppg (32 minute games) so we pretty much scored at will and were basically unstoppable on offense....we had 12 different kids rush for tds and a number of others got to run in two point conversions...we had 23 different ball carriers (34 boys on the roster)...anyhow, we averaged close to 350 yards per game on the ground...one of the parents could be heard yelling "you have to pass, you have to keep them honest, they have 8 in the box!!!" (we have NEVER seen less than 8 in the box and dont worry about that at all)...anyhow, a few games into the season we had a pair of easy td passes and the same guy yelling "where has the passing game been coach?"...clueless....what i love too is that the parents of the receivers seem to think that if you dont pass in a game that there kids arent being prepared for the next level...as if you dont pass in practice? btw, every friday (our games were thursdays) we worked on the passing game for a good hour in addition to playign touch football....the same kids would miss those days lol...yeah, parents....really, just gotta call em "Agents".

here's the real kicker:
team last year: 0-10, scored 75 points all year we come in during spring, make changes: look good in spring game, 7 on 7....all paper could talk about was how the qb looks completely different, 180 degrees from last year's poor performance. the no-huddle scheme they have implemented will really level the playing field for us. we start year 2-0, scored 77 total points in doing it. now, i'm the smartes guy ever, amazing how i can teach a qb and implement an offense. then, the crap happens....qb loses his mind, some seniors start to show their real colors. lose close game after close game (5 by total of 33 points). NOW, i'm stupid for running that oneback no-huddle crap because we should have been lining up and smash-mouthing people like we always have. i did a poor job getting the qb to play, couldn't do this or that.......

Was coaching middle school 7th grade team my first year. Head Coach at high school wants us to run double tight T all year (Had no problem with this, it helped the kids learn to block and developed three running backs.) A dad comes into the coaches office one day and starts drawing up spread stuff he is using in the pee-wee league and suggests we add some of that to our playbook. I made the mistake of explaining how we run the bare basics of the high school system and (sarcasticly say) that maybe he should take it up with the H.S. head coach if he doesn't like what we are doing thinking this will shut him up. He did.....about ten seconds after this parent left the head coaches office I get a call to drive over to the high school and got a good butt chewing. I deserved it, didn't really think people were that obtuse, I was wrong.

I deserved it, didn't really think people were that obtuse, I was wrong. I had the exact sma thing/ opposite thing happen. we run spread, had a Pop Warner Coach show and up and say we needed to be in the double tight end T. First confronted my Middle school Coaches, they told the guy the smae thing. He shows up asks if he can talk to me, I say sure, invite him into my office and starts giving me a chalk talk on the T. I said 2 coaches ago ran the Power I, last coach ran the Wing T, we are going to do something different. He says "These kids know this system, I won the Pop warner league running Iso." Isay it is pretty easy to run ISO when every kid weighs the exact same. Ah.. good old Pop Warner! I wasn't ticked at my Middle school Coaches.
