Other than just flat out winning, what other ways can you build tradition?

I would say being a supportive staff to your players/family- (i.e. academic support, personal support, graduation rate, GPA rate, college rate)
Be supportive team to the school- (i.e. connect your team with programs in the school, connect outsiders with the program, build and maintain rapport with teachers and administrators, support non-athletic programs and activities, maintain consistency with your team and school rules)
Be a supportive team to the community- (i.e. connect your team to the community through volunteer work, connect your community to the team)
IMHO, if you focus on all of these little things, instead of winning, that WINNING TRADITION will follow! "PAY ATTENTION TO THE MINUTES INSTEAD OF THE HOURS!"

that's hard, because so much of tradition is built on what the kids and community do in response to the program. you've got to embrace something that is important to the community of people that go to your school. i think longevity has a lot to do with it as well. if look at it, some of the schools with great traditions had a coach or two that were there for a long time and kept those things alive. today, those situations are happening less and less. also, in the major areas where lots of growth is occurring, the students don't have time to build up those traditions because they might be going to a different school than what their older brother or sister did.
winning has a lot to do with it, but so does being there a long time.

Building rituals is important too! It can define a program in peoples minds.

Tradition is built by coaches who are around. I played under 6 HC in 8 Years of playing football. The HS I coach at now has had 3 HC and each was an assistant under the previous. Tradition carries on. I believe traditions are built on longevity more than anything else.

Being Mentally Tough can be part of a TRADITION. No Excuses--Play anyone, anywhere, any place.
