I was given a DVR as a house warming gift by some friends of ours and about 1 out of 3 times when I try to dub a vhs tape to the dvr I get a unrepairable disc message. Is this due to the quality of the disc or my DVR? I have been using TDK DVD-R 8X speed disc and that matches the specs on the DVR.

I get a similar message when I use discs the recorder doesn't like. I'm not too knowledagable about DVDs and such, but I've read that you shouldn't go cheap when buying DVD-Rs.
That said, I don't really know what quality DVD-Rs are. I went to Best Buy and bought one of the more expensive brands I knew of (Sony I believe).
Buy a small quantity of a different brand DVD-Rs and see if the same thing happens.

certain DVR's only want certain DVD-R's, read the manual it show say the exact one, these things can be stupid.

Cheap DVR's have lasers in them that do not preform very well. Walmart has the Lilo brand that they are selling for 70 to 80 dollers. I had to take back 3 of them before I got one to work. The 4th one has been great. The first 3 would claim that about every 3rd disc was bad.

Can anyone give me some advice on what kind of VHS-DVD recorder combo to buy? Have looked online but get mixed reviews. I am kinda' technologically challenged, so I'm looking for some help. Any suggestions? ? Thanks.....

I've got a Lite On LVC-9006 and it works great. Would recommend it to anyone. It records from DVD to VHS both ways and has an easy guide button that makes it very simple (that's why I like it so much!). It got a very good review from CNET who also said it's recorded DVD's work well with a lot of other DVD players, which apparently can be a problem.

I have had the ILo Brand DVD recorder from Walmart for close to a year now. I love it.. Have never had a problem with is.. and I got some updates off the net that I uploaded from a disk to the machine and now I can record copyrighted material..
In my machine you have to use DVD+R not DVD-R disks..
The reason I bought the ILO was because I bought a high end Sony off ebay and it wouldnt work.. sent it back.. got another one.. still wouldnt work.. Come to find out.. you had to use high end disks as well..
