To small school ADs (don't know how many are out there...but it's worth a shot): What is your school's policy for removing (firing) a coach. In other words, whose responsibility is it to actually "let the coach go"? Is it the responsibility of the AD, Principal, Superintendent, School Board, etc.? What is the process you have- especially if there is disagreement between the entities? I'm trying to arm myself with info. as we have a situation here. Thanks.

Firings (or non-renewals) should be done with the AD and Principal in the room at the same time. I assume you have documented the reasons for wanting to let this coach go. The Supt. and Board are typically part of the appeals process.

Actually, I want to keep the coach... school board wants him out. In 2 years I had no complaints whatsoever (he is a bit temperamental at times... not a perfect guy, but nothing worthy of a firing). I just heard about this last week and am not willing to let him go so we are having a board meeting (activities committee) tonight. A school gets a bad reputation for doing stuff like this (parents bypass coach/AD/principal and go to school board and school board decided this w/o involving me)...in the end, no one will want to coach there (including the current head football coach/AD/principal/me).

In that case my advise is to present your written evaluations of the coach for his time with you. Keep the conversation professional and focus on the objective information. Try not to allow anectdotal evidence (parent complaints, rumors, etc.) to enter into the discussion. YOU and the administration are the professionals responsible for hiring and mentoring the coaches - you should be allowed to do so unless there is some gross negligence going on. Good Luck.

All went well. I have a list of several things for him to improve in the future. I do not mind complaints... I do mind when I hear none until the March 12 board meeting when I turn in the duty assignment roster. All of this should have come to me (AD) when the "problems" occurred (January), which did not happen... but I think we (i.e. board) is clear on the process now.

Senator- Glad to hear that went well......As I'm sure you know and eluded to, that can be a mess if parents try to go do board members to get their way. Good to hear your board listened to you, although it would have been nice if they told those folks that their comments should go to you first in January......that kind of stuff can scar a coach/staff member for life......they can hold that stuff, and rightly so, for life and say no to any more extracurricular activities.....It's a sad fact of life that our job depends on the current axe(s) to grind for the current board.

I think (hope) that will not be the case with this guy. He is a young coach and he is willing to (actually WANTS to) coach girls basketball. I understand there is more to sports than wins/losses...but we had won 6 games in 5 years before he came on board. With him won 6 and 10... so he's doing a lot of things right.
