I once had a kid quit the team because I said that soccer was a Communist attempt to take over America through the feminization of the young men in our society.

superpower---that is the most assanine thing I have ever heard. EVERYONE KNOWS that soccer was a Communist attempt to take over America through the small invasions of Cuban select tournament teams.
The uneducated bias out there is astounding.

Coach C - Not sure why you felt bad afterwards....you spoke the truth AND you said what YOU believed. IMHO, nothing wrong with that at all. BTW, I AGREE with what you said 100%. ;D I know my kids on my team know how I, and all the other coaches feel about soccer too...

The place where my 9yo team practices has soccer fields and we told our boys that if we catch them dogging it in practice they get to turn in their uniform and go kick a pink ball with the soccer queens. That, along with the threat of getting them pink helmets, keeps them motivated at practice.

I felt bad because there had been a time when the soccer players and football players could barely coexist and we do share athletes. It was a stupid thing to say really. The reality is that all kids should participate in something and to make fun of it really wasnt cool. I felt bad. really.

Not targeted at anyone on here in particular, more in the sports world in general, but I'm still not getting why some people (seems like mostly football and wrestling guys) are so insecure about something that they have to pick on soccer. It's a different game. Why not basketball? Why not baseball? Why not hockey? Why attack another sport at all? Bugs the crap out of me.

I trash soccer all the time; everyone on our staff does. If mommy and daddy are complaining about it, then their kid probably isn't playing much for us. He's more than welcome to go join the soccer team. No big loss there.

Fort--Calande---you are both right. I will admit that I have used soccer as the butt of many jokes with football people...and also that one of the toughest two way players (lb and wing-t OG) I have every coached was a soccer goalie.
It is steretypical and wrong.

Heck, at least they do run around, rough it up a little, trying to steal the ball and have some pretty cool collisions in soccer from time to time. Now, if you really want to stereotype a slacker sport, my choice is baseball! If a bunch of old, fat guys can still play it while consuming copious amounts of beer, smoking and chewing, it can't be tooo difficult

One time, I was coaching 7-11 year olds in the fine sport of Football.
This one kid who was a documented case of ADHD was screwing around in practice. Saying things like "You're my uncle potatoe head". Very weird stuff. After about two practices, he starts up again one of the other kids on the teams says "Hey Andrew, Quit being a soccer player!!!" It was by far the funniest thing that I had heard on a field in a while.
Football is a sport for young men, Soccer is a sport for girls and boys whose mothers are afraid of football.

My four and six year old boys both play soccer. My reasoning is it helps their feet for football when they get old enough to play.
A side note, I usually say "if you don't want to hit or get hit, go play tennis".

I think the issue that football coaches sometimes has with soccer is directly due to the fact that they are in the same season and some athletic kids are lost to that sport. I have no problem with soccer at all, i was just trying to make a point and shouldnt have brought up another sport since some of the kids are so sensitive about the subject.

I once had a kid (who wrestled in the winter) say he quit b/c my OL coach (who coached hoops in winter) was joking around making fun of wrestlers. The wrestlers were giving it back to him and it was all in good fun. The boy's bad wanted an apology and wanted me to repremand the coach. I informed the dad that no repremand would happen, but the coach did apoligize on his own to the kid for hurting his feelings but added "everyone else got the joke." Some people are too friggin sensitive.

I don't have a problem with soccer, but I get tired of ESPN ramming "futbol" down my throat every couple years. The hoopla around David Beckham was ridiculous. And honestly, what do soccer players expect people to think when they fall to the ground and wither in pain like they've been shot by a tank round every time they get slide tackled, but then you see football players playing in a ridiculous amount of pain week in and week out.

Our staff has a running joke with the kids about soccer injuries. If you go down and roll around for more than 3 secs and are overdramatic, then assisted off the field by a trainer and return within minutes, it is refered to as a "soccer injury." If you don't believe me and can bear to watch, spend ten minutes watching a soccer game. The injured become magically healed within minutes. Magic powers in the spotted melon....

Our staff has a running joke with the kids about soccer injuries. One minor correction, coach -- it's soccer itself that's the running joke.

Maybe I am a little paranoid, But it seems to me that Espn and the powers that be are shoving soccer down our throats every chance they get. Again I might be wrong but most Americans are happy with basketball, football, and baseball. All part of the Communist plot...

A few years back Coach Hugh Wyatt had a funny picture on his website of Osama Bin Laden flying a plane over an American city and dropping soccer balls out.

Some thoughts about this:
Soccer is the political correct sport, girls play with boys....what happen to good old Doctor!
I think Homeland Security should look at this issue!
I blame Global Warming on Soccer, because of Soccer Moms, the Mini Van then the SUV came about...
I never saw Soccer in a John Wayne Movie...sounds like the San Francisco birkenstock sensitive male conspiracy.
David beckham is actually Posh Spice....

The few weeks ago the soccer coach was complaining because his soccer game got cancelled from being in the stadium (grass field) because it rained in the afternoon some and he had to play it Friday afternoon on his normal field. This guy was POed and actually asked the AD and varsity HC if they could play the football game on Saturday so he could have his senior nite in the stadium. The AD told him no way and asked him how many people would he have coming to his game, he said about 100-150. The AD and HC laughed in his face and told him there would be 4,500 in the stands for football and some of that money goes to buying all those little balls you kick around! He was even angrier and told them they do not respect soccer and the AD jabbed back that any kid in America can play soccer and maybe more people would watch soccer if people were chasing after you and could lay you out as you were trying to score. One of the best days of my life sitting there watching the guy storm out! Next morning at bus duty I wished him good luck at his senior afternoon game.... He doesn't say a word to me anymore.
