Yknow fellas, taking a look ahead to next season...i see myself with a number of linemen that have issues with grades. when it comes time to pencil in my lineup it concerns me that i might have a number of boys getting reps who i wont be able to count on by mid september. What kinds of things do you guys do when you KNOW you have a few kids that will struggle to maintain eligibilty...do you just assume them to be backups? I probably will.

I would make sure you have a plan B if they do become ineligable. I would talk to the young men and tell them that athletically they are your best OL, but your not too sure if you and the team can count on them unless they get their grades up. Make sure that you give them along with their backups reps with the first unit.

I am in the same boat, probably my best two linemen are struggling greatly with 11th grade English. Luckily, here in NC academic eligibility is based on the previous semester, so if they pass English, they will be eligible all season, but I have been working the poop out of two young sophmore to take over if needed.

Just pencil them in as back-ups, and get the kids you KNOW will be eligible as many reps in practice as you can. Coaching up a team is hard enough, without having to worry about the starters missing the season because of grades.

I agree with the other coaches you have to make sure the other guys are prepared. Give them all as many reps as you can but focus more on the kids that you are sure will be there. The other kids you may want to talk to them, talk to their parents and see if you can get them to focus on their school work as hard as they do on the football field. And find out from their teachers were they need help and get them the tutoring that they need.
