Question for those that handle the recruiting aspect for their teams, do you send out unconsolidated film to schools or do you wait until they contact you for film
Thanks

You can do so; be advised that some low level guy is going to be watching it first to filter ones worth sending along, so do a good job on it.

Oh geez, that's the worst. I think I'm going to write some kind of guide for how to put together a video that fulfills just the basic requirements to be tolerable.

We make a prospect list that includes links to their Hudl highlights, core GPA, and any other things such as awards that we want to include. We then send this list to every school (California/Arizona JCs, D3, D2, FCS, BCS) that plays college football. We will either send it to the recruiting coordinator or to the area recruiter. If we do not know the area recruiter and there is not a recruiting coordinator listed we will send it to the HC. I did that this year and probably received around 150 responses from different coaches around the country. You'll find a lot of the smaller colleges will respond because this really helps them out. Most of the BCS schools won't, they just show up during the spring. It definitely helps for our non-BCS type kids though.

How long does that take, is there a process you use that streamlines the information?

How long does that take, is there a process you use that streamlines the information? We have a prospect list on our team website. I just take that list and add the GPA information to it in a word doc and send it out, with a link to the website. It's fairly easy. The most time consuming thing was building the database of of schools/recruiting coordinators/area recruiters. But now it's very simple for us just to copy all email addresses and send it out. Next year we will include a face shot of each player. You would be surprised how often they want to know the race of a player. The biggest thing is sending out the list at the right time. If a school is in spring ball you will most likely not get a response back.

I am a recruiting coordinator at a small college. ABSOLUTELY you should send unsolicited film. What I would ask you to do is to also send GPA, Class Rank, SAT and preferred major (or 2). I don't want to waste my time on a kid below a 2.5 gpa or a kid with his heart sent on a major we don't offer.
Lastly, edit the video, BEST plays first. If a kids best play is 5 minutes in, I may not even watch it. Front load the tape with all the kids best stuff.

I agree with youngballcoach. I've had recruiters sitting in our office and they usually determine within the first two minutes of film whether the kid can play or not. Any highlight film longer than 5 minutes is useless. If we don't have SAT scores we list the date they will be taken.

I don't mind if a tape is longer than 5 minutes, it's just doubtful I'll ever get to it. 30% of my opinion is probably wrapped up in the first two plays, 50% in 40 seconds, and 90% in 2 minutes. So make the first part count.
