hey guys , need some help. Going to be interviewing soon for a head coaching job at a good school. Does anyone out there have any materials I could look at to go into an interview armed with? Manuals for players, parents, etc. Maybe some potential interview questions, etc>? Anything you think could help?

The one question I was not ready for was "How will I get the community involved in supporting the program?" I could handle all of the football questions...philosophies...discipline etc. but by this one I was stumped at the time.

Here's a question I had asked of me in an interview once....
"If you had to choose between quality or quantity (#'s) in starting your FB program, which one would you choose?"

There are a few ideas that might help.
1. have a charity fundraiser. Pick a charity and conduct a fundraiser. Donlt go overboard, but let your paper's sports guy know when you will present the check. you are helping people and promoting your program and kids.
2. find out if any elderly people in your community need some help cleaning up a yard, etc. If they are willing, show up with a bunch of kids and get 'er done!
3. Present a nice desk radio to a local retirement homes rec room... tell them you would appreciate it if they would listen to your games. Bring some players and visit with some elderly folks who might really appreciate it. Demonstrate a lost art - respect for our elders.
4. Have some of your senior leaders read to a K-4th grade class once a week. have them wear thier jersey. Have them take a calendar with a team picture for thier classroom.
5. Make a bunch of DVDs of your past highlight videos. Present them to your local Natl. guard or military base to send overseas to service men who might like seeing some great plays from friday night games.

jman- that will always come up when dealing with a small town football program. It's not like you are in Dallas or Seattle. I will have to face the same questions.

Veersite those are some awesome ideas and thoughts!!!! With each passing week I have come across more and more coaches who think outside the box!
Some things we have gotten involved in are...."Toys for Tots", working with the district's school nurses and counselors we are able to identify boys and girls of families who are less fortunate within our district. Each of our athletes get a child to sponsor....Boy 8, Girl 4, Girl 7, Boy 5, on and on....they pick something out for the child and wrap it with a christmas tag on it with the child's name on it and signed We help coordinate the delivery areas and our kids personally deliver them during the last couple of days before winter break. It is amazing to hear year in and year out the excitement of our players when they return to campus after finishing their runs!

The AD who was retiring but handling the interviewing process for the incoming AD (who happened to be the outgoing head football coach)...."What is the most crucial piece of equipment for a football player?" After my dissertation on the different pros and cons on the helmet and shoudler pad options on the market he informed me that SHOES are the most important.....WITHOUT QUESTION IN HIS WORDS! Of course he had no background in football whatsoever....he was a straight basketball guy! I was young and hungry for that first Head Football job.....but in retrospect sure wish I would have said thanks but no thanks when offered the job!

Heres my all time favorite interview question..."why do you run THAT?" ...."If it worked the PROS would run it!"...no wonder it was like 20 years since the school had a winning season.
