Was wondering if anyone had any tips/tricks for learning new things or good habits that help retain as much football info as possible.
Example - I got in a habit of whenever i'm reading anything on here or a football site or at a clinic, anytime something is said that I don't know or understand I write it down and research later.
I've heard some coaches each offseason will try to master 1 offense and 1 defense, even if its something they don't plan to run or play against. Doesn't seem like much, but after 10 years that's a lot of knowledge to have.
Nothing crazy or major, just wondering if anyone has any little things they do that help learning/remembering.

I've always been a flash cards guy. Helped me a lot learning terminology, roles and responsibilities of our offense and defense.
Also, I write EVERYTHING down in meetings and review my notes daily. Helped a lot.

I would say that like many things, it is important to know what your preferred way to learn are. I personally really struggle to learn if the first thing I do is pick up a book. I tend to get lost in the details. I will usually try to talk to someone about the big picture/concept, or watch a video or lecture about it. Then I can go back to a book, coachhuey positing, etc. and start to sift through and understand the detail.

Im not smart enough to master any offense or any defense in one year. Takes me at least 3-4 years to feel some level of mastery.

When I go to clinics or watch coaching DVDs I take hand-written notes on important points. Then, I type them up later.
That extra typing helps to reinforce what I've learned and I also have a digital copy for myself.

I also give copies to other staff members so that they can pick something up. Helpful hint: pass a copy to your AD. It lets him know that you didn't spend the weekend slamming beers.

I taught myself the basics of the Delaware wing-T last year from Tubby Raymond's books and this site. Took notes in a composition book and reviewed them multiple times. Doesn't take me much more than that and drawing it up.
I am not suggesting that I could call it, but I learned a lot about series based approaches and if/then play calling that I took back to our offense.

Going into my 9th year of coaching. What has helped me...
1) my typical learning progression: Video - Book - 1 on 1 meeting - then Clinic on a particular subject - then more 1 on 1 meetings. Honestly..the longer I coach, the more I realize the value of visiting with other coaches then going to a clinic.
2)Any notes I take at a clinic, from a video, meeting, etc. I go home and type up that night to further clarify what I was thinking -when taking notes, try to put it in your team's terminology
3) I keep binders of copies of notes on certain areas of football for reference ( Offensive Line, Defense, Wing-T).

I try and write all of the things down that I hear at a clinic, even if there are handouts being given. I found out two years ago in a Masters class I took that I am a kinesthetic learner (maybe the only useful thing I got out of the class) and that the reason I always did well in lecture oriented classes was due to the fact I took alot of notes. So, I try and write down everything I hear so that it sinks in my break better, then I'll type those notes up later on.
Another thing I've done to help me is to keep working files of various topics that people post on and put all of that in a Word file so that I can reference it easily without searching through the board.

I am a firm believer in 2 things that have already been said and 1 other process.
Write the notes yourself then type them out, especially as if you are going to give them to someone else.
Visit and talk to others, best if you can do it in a setting where there isn't a crunch for time and they can get in depth with answers and troubleshoot. Focus on the process and the why more than just the design.
The other thing is to clinic your other coaches. Explain what it is and have the defensive coaches shoot holes in it to make you justify. Have the other coaches ask the what ifs so that you have to come up with the answers and truly think the scheme and rational through. It will also help you find the compliments if need be.
Some of the best learning of our system I have come up with has been on our drives to and from clinics when the HC throws out hypotheticals...DC if we motion out of this look what would your reaction be...OC if the defense is giving you this look what plays would we want to run? Why?
