What do you do about a core group of parents that may be troublemakers. The typical "pat you on the back to find a soft spot to stick the knife" kind of parents? As a new head coach moving into a program in a new town for you?

Sun Tzu always said, "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer still." Hope it helps.

"Keep on trucking" don't let them dictate your coaching style and certainly don't be concerned with what they say... parents will be parents. Your concerns should be with your Program...
And the key word here is "may." Don't start making Drama for yourself...
Believe me, I learned that real fast...

If you let parents dictate what you are doing then are you really the heaad coach? I have a belief that I will put the best players on the field regardless if mom and dad thinks little timmy is the best player we have. If he isnt then he wont play that much. I had a high school coach who coached this way, we could have had a better team had we fielded the best players but he let mom and dad get to him and we played "little rich boys" instead of football players. Another thing that I absolutely hate is "glory boys" If they arent a team player then they wont play on my team, it takes a team to win not just one player.

Have a parents meeting and give all the parenst acopies of everything. When a parent calls you or attacks you kill them with kindness.

If you are going to get fired...get fired doing what you believe in...That's the ticket! There are 2 types of coaches in the world anyway...those of us who have been fired and those of us who are going to be...Whatever happens you have to look in the mirror every day.

Just my thoughts...
I was on the sidelines when one of my teammates was injured. 4th and goal with 20 secs on the play clock. My coach calls for, "I need a D-tackle." I was right beside my coach with my helmet strapped on and everything. I went out there and my coach yanked me off the field and put in another kid who was a junior.
Granted the kid was bigger than me. I was 6'0 220 while my teammate was 6'5 290. However my coaches reasoning and explanation was what really infuriated besides being yanked off the field in front of the whole town...
1. Time was counting down and was at the heat of the monement. That's debatable without a doubt and could be a topic.
2. He wanted someone in there with experience. Well, my teammate hasn't played D-line since his freshman year while I played the spot since 8th grade and started. This was both our first year on Varsity and they converted him to DT a the week of the game. He was at the Strong Guard position and was the only person for his spot.
3. My personal favorite... "I didn't mean for it to happen but, I wasn't sorry for it." That's debatable as well except that it's a double negative and in math double negatives translate to positives. 4. After that incident, I mysteriously went from the 2nd string to the 4th string.
My thing out of that situation is that I hope to never have to experience something like that. Mainly from that experience should I get the best job in the world to me as a D-Coordinator, I hope to make it clear who is on the depth chart, and who should truly beside me and kids in case of emergency. My D-Line Coach was a key person to understand this sport. He's just one of those types that's cool outside of the field house but, inside was a different story.
Besides all that you just read, some coaches say that. There may be a situation where you have 2 good kids that can do the job but, the parents of one child might have better influence over another in the community. I'm not accusing anyone of cherrypicking your players. I'm just saying things like that do happen. Don't take my word on this issue. I've seen things on various squads.
