;D whats the one thing your team hangs its hat on offensively? what gives your team identity and whats the one play that you go to when you have a critical 4th and 2 for example?...what identifies your team?
for a dw team, its the toss play..what do you all do?

Trips, Sprint Out, Flood Package. Nice, how many times a game do you challenge the defense with that one?

We base our offense off of inside zone, but when we really need a play we run iso.

Trips, Sprint Out, Flood Package. Nice, how many times a game do you challenge the defense with that one? With HS and MS teams, we generally run a sprint out 10 times a game, minimum. Most teams are going to play C3 against this all day long; so we throw a lot of flag and speed out routes. We have always coached it with run option- if they're manned up: TAKE OFF. With the youth league teams, we're all about the jet series. But then again, we only get a few days of practice a week. So the jet and rocket series comprise our whole offense.

I also like the sprint outs because of our TE screen away from the roll action.

I would say we run inside zone 12 times a game and iso 6.

Our base play is the dive but we also run the midline, inside veer, and outside veer. Everything is predicated off of the dive. The FB will pack the ball anywhere from 15-20 times a game.

We hang our hat on the Flea Flicker Seriously, probably Power. That is our best play.

FLY Offense
If we needed 2-3 yards we will run FLY Sweep. We average about 6-8 with it. With the short yardage the LB's have to stay home. If I noticed the D is overplaying the sweep we'll run iso the other way.

The bread and butter play for us changes every year based on what the kids can do. I do prefer with speedy guys to run quick pitch and with FB types the inside trap. This last year I ran the DW and we hung our hat on the Super Power.

Inside Zone Read--we base off of this and develop about 80% of our running game off of its complements. I would say that we run either ISZ Read or OSZ Read about 12 times a game.

I guess the honest answer is our entire run game, sprint package and quick game would be available on 4th and 2. We don't hang our hat on any one play, but since that was your scenario, I'd have to say Outside Veer would be my favorite.

If I had to pick just one play, it would be a wham play that we run to a 3, 5 or 7 tech. They are going to be on our call sheet every week no matter what, but the frequency in which we call them will be dependent on what the defense is giving us (among other things).

4th and 2= depending on location, what the defense is giving up and being predominately dbl. tight/2back "I", something quick hitting (north and south) like qb sneak/fb dive or lead off tackle= hanging your hat on the power game, but we also hung our hats on deception/field position, so this is a great time for our qb motion/quick punt play= easy 5 yd penalty or punt with no return, but then again, we also loved to hang our hats on deception in the pa passing game, so might just go for it all right here, TE pop, corner or quick slant/post to the "Z"? Never could decide which of the hats fit my fat head, and really didn't want anyone to actually know what identified our offense, cause then they could work hard on stopping it right?

I think it depends on how the game is going as well. Last year, we probably would have ran a FB trap or double Iso out of Power I, but if the D had been stuffing it all game, we might have gone to a sweep or a quick hitch pass.

I have never understood why a coach doesn't A:WAYS have at least 1 card that is only for such a situation...over time learn Lonesome Polecat..or swinging gate.....practice it until it is perfect..even if it is all season..then from then on out when the situation arises "POP" before the "D" knows what hit them..next time use the other......can't prepare for it....beautiful.

4 and 2 we will run one of our 5 zone blocked plays. depending upon matchups and weaknesses on the defense. We run IZ 14-20 times per game and the other 4 zone blocked plays another 12-15 times.

"What you hang your hat on" is different from "What do run on 4th an 2". for some...thats sort of why I asked the question. Some have "the play", some more or less have the same level of confidence in any of their plays depending on what they think the defense is giving them. ie, fake punt for us would probably not yeild the best results because it doesnt get repped nearly enough...but it might fool someone who didnt realize that I hate to punt lol.

I don't know if its a good call, but the defense you face between the 15s is going to be different than the defense you face on 4th & 2....which is the reason there would be a 'different' comfort play for us

Funny, no one has said "waggle" yet...what a great play, maybe the best in all of football. I probably would post that as my favorite call. We just don't execute it well. We broke down our films from last year and we ran way too much Waggle. I didn't think it was possible, but we managed to do it. (It helps to be 3rd and 9 all the time)

We are a baes I formation/power I team. Our best play for the situation described is Valpo which is our version off an off-tackle spring draw. FB kicks out and everyone else up front blocks down. Tough to lose yardage on it.

Not to be contrarian or anything, but the old cliche that I never used to like is;
"In critical situations, think PLAYERS not PLAYS"

"In critical situations, think PLAYERS not PLAYS" I really think you hit it right on the head here. For us, our best player/ball carrier is usually at TB so those type of plays is what we are looking at. But you are 100% right. Think players here, with plays that have a very high % of getting the yardage needed to convert.
