I don't have the answer on this one....but I've heard various attitudes that would suggest that both units must 'match'.
If you run an aggressive defense, then you can't run a conservative offense and vis versa.....
What are your experiences? Can both units be interdependent or exist in a vacuum?
Field position offense must play field position defense?
If so, what are the prefered combinations?

Thats an excellent philosophical question for a "PE" major, Brophy. Do you think its usually a reflection of the HC's overall view of playing football? I've personally always liked to play aggessive defense but more conservative (ball/clock control) offense and pretty conservative field position stuff on special teams(just wedge on KO and maybe a punt block call or fake punt) if all the planets are aligned and my horoscope said it was OK! So I guess my answer would be that they can be different!

I've always believed that they can be unrelated.
You can have an aggressive defense AND an aggressive offense....but what do I know?

styles don't really have to match. however, it doesn't hurt for the 2 sides to work together on their "attacks" from time to time. specifically, if the opponent's offense is unbelievable the dc might get with the oc & request a change in styles ... i.e. "can you slow the tempo down for us?... "snap the ball with 1 second on play clock?" likewise the oc might go to the dc and say, "hey, we are no match for them up front so we've got to take some chances doing such and such. how will this affect your gameplan?" ... or "really go after them to create turnovers or field positions - otherwise, we ain't scoring"
