how many of you state exactly what the responsibilities of your coaches are? Or do you take it forgranted they will just know what to do?
I assume each kid knows nothing the first day of training camp. I assume they are first year football players and need to be retaught. since we have only have 4 contact days in the summer and no spring pactice in my state, i find this to be the best approach.

I think this is a big issue with some guys, they cant or wont spell out anything...hard to follow if you arent led.

As a HC I spelling out exactly who was responsible for what. Since we were in a small school a lot of things overlapped but still everyone had a clear picture of what they were supposed to do. I'm going to be an assistant at a larger school next year (I don't consider it a step down at all..becoming an assistant again...this school is a top notch program) and I want the head coach to clearly spell out what I am supposed to do/what my responsibilities are. Each coach should have a job description written out. I agree it is hard to follow if you are not led.

I've been a part-time, volunteer, off campus coach my entire football coaching life. I've always enjoyed it and actually got paid some one season! When I work for another HC, helping with "his" team, I just ask him what he wants me to teach, how he wants it done and come to any meetings he asks me to. If we have a day when he says "just do what you want", thats cool too! As long as we practice in full equipment and can hit a little lol!

When I was running my own middle school team, the first thing I did was ask the HS head coach what he expected out of the ms program. He gave me a list of EDDs and showed me the basics within his offensive and defensive schemes. I had a few wrinkles in the offensive scheme, but the basics and the terminology was the same.
However, I have seen situations where responsibilities/expectations were laid out to the assistants in a very clear and detailed manner, but several of them still put very little into what they were doing.
