Fellow Coaches,
Can you guys each think about the best way to organize and runa fundraising lift-a-thon and please check the Coach Huey site as well for ideas? I haven’t run one before and need your help…………………… Thinking bench and squat only? For example: Each player finds sponsors to pledge how much they want based on per rep. 95lbs in bench and 135lbs in squat?
Much appreciated!!

We used to do one based on the max bench of the athlete. People would pledge per pound or flat amount. Set up a few benches in the aux. gym, turn on the PA, crank the music and let the people watch the boys get after it. This was very successful for us.

joboo has it right.
You can get people to pledge a penny per lb, a nickle per lb, a quater per lb, or even a dollar!!!
Have the players wear their jerseys and go out into the community to hit up local business, neighbors whomever.
Advertise it also to the community, and take donations at the event as well.
Probably one of the simplest fund raisers to pull off.

Depending on how fast you need money, the best time to do it is at the end of the summer before two-a-days start. In theory, your community should really be thinking football at this time and your kids should be at their strongest. I agree it's easier to use the one rep max for the weight. Most people will just donate some straight cash as opposed to pledging per pound, which is actually better because they'll probably donate more than the per pound amount would have been!

We do have done it the last two years. Last year I required them to get 20 pledges of at least a penny per pound. I told them that at a minimum they would owe this amount and if they didn't get the pledges to cover it they had to. This year I just said you all have to raise atleast 60 dollars, if you want to go out and get pledges, or if you want to just pay 60 bucks. I like the idea of opening the max time up to the public, we may look at that next year to get a little more involvement.

We do a bench-a-thon at the end of winter lifting. Kids are divided into three weight classes and get 2 chances at any weight they can bench 3x. A week before the actual event, we test them, so they have a week to get the money. We give prizes to the winners in each weight class, the overall best lifter, the highest pledge total in each weight class and overall highest pledge. Kids get a t-shirt at the event. We also get local merchants to donate all kinds of stuff for prizes. We invite family and friends to attend. At the end of the night, we give the kids pizza. We make some good $$$ with this event; it only takes about a week.
The bench-a-thon is held at the conclusion of winter sports, so we do not have all our kids participate(meaing those who were invoved in winter sports). We will have about 60-80 kids participate and make about $5000.
