There has been some debate about hiring "young". Im younger than most HC and DC in the area. I dont think one is better than they other.
First...you cant substitue experience. I first started coaching with my highschool HC and DC. Those 8yrs are priceless. Learned lots about organization, prepartion, attention to detail, professionallism. My college coach before he left the game..mentored about having a personal relationship with each player(not going to name drop)and he has been around for 60 plus. With these kinds of infulences I consider myself "old school'
And in no way do I think "ALL" older coaches are out of touch!
On the other hand I know that my age has help relate to some of our players as well. They see this young guy that serious about running a program and "Coaching"(not just yelling/screaming cursing kids out!)really teaching the fundamentals. They see that it wasnt that long ago that I was sweating it out paying the price myself. I think they respect that or somewhat are quicker to believe things that I tell them.
There are times when we pull the XBox out and I have to kick butt in Madden or watch UFC...I dont mind the radio being on full blast in the locker room, but when its time to handle business...they know what is expected. I dont try to play best friend or act as if Im 15 but you gotta be able to relate and your players gotta be able to realte to you.
You have to agree, kids are different today than once before. When I was coming up..you respected adults no matter what. Now day you have to show that you deserve to be respected. Which I can totally understand. Could this be the difference?
