Just read an article about the Houston public schools being on a merit pay system...does anyone know how that works? I assume that most public schools use some kind of salary schedule that gives pay raises for years and additional graduate credits. How does merit pay work?

When you tie teacher pay to test scores, what do you think the teachers are going to teach in the classroom everyday? A diverse, well rounded curriculum? Hell no! They're going to teach how to get better grades on the standardized tests. While I've no problem with accountability, this sounds like another attempt by people who arent "in the trenches" to account for the problem of bad parents ( and bad students) by blaming teachers.

How would you suggest one be held accountable? Ive worked with many teachers and just like in nearly any other organization on earth, there were some that were very good and some that were very bad. As a student, I had some teachers we didnt care for that worked extremely hard, there after school and home phone #s etc and others that often didnt require anything. We had a business teacher that often had no lesson at all for the day, but he was well liked. It was my understanding that both recieved the same pay and benefits as they were about the same age etc. despite the huge discrepency in effort.

I am a teacher but I have noo problem teaching to teh test. Just put what they need to learn most on the tests opposed to showing videos, cutting out pictures out of magazines to make collages, folding roadmaps ( I'm serious). About time someone besides coaches had some accountability.
