Coaches has anyone ever had trouble scoring and how did you fix it. My offense last year just could not put the ball in the end zone. I tried everything I knew to do. Tried to run it in, tried to throw it in, nothing seemed to work. In practice I would do team situational practices inside the 20 to give them some confidence. We moved the ball just couldn't put it in. I tried everything in the game. Scripted red zone plays, stayed with the plays that got us inside the 20, nothing. It eventually affected my Defense. My seniors (Juniors now), have had this problem since freshmen. They have usually won but with scores like 8-6 or 14-7. It's a little different for them at the varsity level. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks Coach P

What kind of offense do you run? Practice "Scoring plays" like shovels, sprint out passes, play action and the like. Also defenses get more aggressive down there. Expect a blitz every other play. Also Bill Walsh liked to throw the ball into the end zone as soon as he hit the 25 or so, down at like the 8 it gets hectic.
As a final resort, some teams (like Georgetown college) ran a unique unbalanced delaware wing-t set down there. The idea was to do something unique based on misdirection and power when they got into the scoring area. Georgetown averaged something like 60 points a game for a season awhile doing that.

I agree withe spread attack- from the 25 down to the 5, throw the ball. That's what we did with the last MS team I coached- lots of PA and sprint outs in that area. We would call our bread and butter runs in the open field and save the PAs off of them for the red zone.
Also, if you're not running option, think about installing 1-2 triple option plays for the red zone. We played several flexbone teams that did that too us- made life tough. They'd run their non option attack in the open field and then come at us with midline and ISV in the red zone.
