Thinking about this while reading the Head Coaches Role During Practice post and didn't want to steal the post so I will pose the question here.
How many of your are or work for a head coach who does not coordinate one of the phases of the game . . . or coach a position for that matter? What are the advantages and disadvantages for a head coach not having a specific coaching responsibility?

The place that I am currently coachin at has a coach who is giving up the coordinating responsibility to someone else. He wants to be able to focus on the in game situations and less on what defense to call. I think it will workout a lot better because he will not have to fly off the handle so much. He will be coaching a position only in a secondary role, but for the most part will be letting the coaches' coach and worrying about the organization of the team.
The place I left was very big on having coordinators, but the HC has final say. Let the coordinators worry about the gameplan (unless they sit on their hands and do nothing) and worry about the organization of the team.

As HC I coordinate the special teams and give my OC and DC almost total control of game calls. I am also the OL position coach. One thing I really like about the arrangement is it puts an automatic emphasis on two areas that I feel are of great importance, just because the HC is in charge of those areas. Secondly, it allows me to be able to do a better job of overall game management and team management.

I've never been around a HC who wasn't a coordinator of at least one side and a position coach of both sides of the ball. 2 of my former HCs have been D coordinators/LB/O line coaches. 2 have been O coordinators/RB/Qb/ DB coaches. I was a D coordinator/ D line/O line coach. This year I'll be a D coordinator/ kind of roving defensive genius/ O line coach, while our HC will be the O coordinator/QB/RB/ LB coach.

I'm the HC at a small school. I've always run the offense, mainly because I was fortunate if I had one coach who was qualified to coordinate. 3 years ago I had one of our young assistants assume the DC role during games but I was always in his hip pocket. He has grown each year and has been given more responsibility. Right now we are working to hire a local head coach who would be more than qualified to run either side of the ball - a luxury we have not had. I enjoy the game planning and the play calling but if I can be more valuable as the head coach in a non-coordinator role then we will do it.
