What would be the things you'd be looking out for if you were to start a completely different program now.
What would you do different (lessons learned)? How would you build a program from the ground up? What's Important?

You will want to check out how many football players make the D/F list at the school. You would also want to see how the kids treat the facilities. Do they leave garbage lay around on floors/lockeroom/outside etc. Find out why the previous coaches left/got fired. If you admin were at different schools in the recent past call those schools coaches to see if they were supportive. Talk to coaches in other sports at your current school to see if the AD/admin people are supportive of thier programs. Find out how far they are willing to go to build a winner. Look out for a school where there is alot of rapid turnover in the coaching staff. For example if you are the 3rd coach in 5 years. Even in other sports it could be a sign of a trend. I am the longest serving boys coach in my district (5 years). I have seen 3 hoops coaches, and 2 baseball coaches and contant turnover at the assistant positions in all sports. Obviously you want to know about your assistants and what kind of control you have over the jr high and other feeder program.

Talk to the booster club to see what kind of support you might have. Check with the other coaches in the same league - see what their impressions are of the school and kids. Talk with the AD to see what kind of budget/fundraising you might have. Get film from the last season and review it. And talk to some of the kids .
I think the most important thing at this point, would be your ability to accomplish your goals. Whether they be winning championships, helping kids, enjoying your work, finding stability, good family situation, etc. You will be much more effective in whatever you do if you are in a situation that feels good. You'll be excited to go to work. You'll bring true enthusiasm. You'll motivate by example.
The coach that I work for is a former NFL player and he coached at Colorado and Cal. He took a HS job to spend more time with his family. I wondered if he would get too frustrated by the backward step. But no, I think he loves what he does. And I see the enthusiasm he brings to his job. It's inspiring. My pointi is that he established HIS goals, and waited for the right opportunity. It worked for him.
For me, I would also mostly consider the kids and my ability to help them. I would look for a situation where I would be of the most use. I know the frustrations of the job, so I doubt I would go to a program where I had NO chance of winning. Unmotivated kids, no assistant stipends, no budget, interefering parents, lack of administration support, lack of facilities and high coach turnover would all be serious considerations.

I just finished the season at a school that the head varsity coach is finishining his second yr tonight hopefully at .500 last year he was .400. The team has left a independent league back into the regular District schedule. Support is everything and it is very weak, school Admin ties his hands over everything which in turn sucks. If you read my post "worse season I ever had" it will explain alot of the problems in the school itself and the character of the kids, a bunch of tough nuts and very little disipline. I have to agree with the above post. I would hope that the Admin would let the Coach do his job and help him change this program around but it has been this way for 30 sum odd yrs and will probably be the same for another 30. If we're to change from an after school babysitting service to a real Football program it would be amazing but then again it is up to Admin to allow a coach to coach........out!!!!!!

there is a very good reason some schools always stink at football. they hire the wrong guys, they dont support them...funny, when the right guy comes in, they find ways to give support and viola, instant winning season. i know for me, i am gonna get hired and THEY WILL support me...or "hey where the heck did calande go?" lol.

anyhow, ...as i said it starts with good people, a good plan and support for the plan. you cant get to where you want to be if you dont have the support. you cannot bend much on your vision. set your goals and get em done. one thing and i think this is perhaps the biggest thing, you have to have control over who is on your staff. you cant do anything without a team of PASSIONATE coaches who are selfless and available. they must get plenty of ownership and responsibility. that often comes with trust. at least for me. i had some assistants that wanted to do their own thing and had to set them straight. administrative support is critical too. will they back your discipline philosophy? will they let you practice when it rains?...
staffing structure, hiring philosophy, coaching philosophy (staff and personal) mission vision statement purpose priority outline and explanation (faith/family/academics/football/social life) philosophy on boosters and fund raising ideas how to get community support and give ownership...my idea, lots of people can give a little, rther than a few giving much. i want the community to see it as "our program" not "their program". how are you going to deal with discipline, promote academics off season conditioning and team building recruiting staff development and training youth league, feeder system and how you plan to install that pre game prep half time organization post game activity youth night team dinner philosophy/goals/objectives on jr high/jv/ms/youth managers and how they are used pre game check list parent contract player contract coaching contract self evaluations philosophy on scouting daddy night moms night recognizing seniors power season awards unity council in season awards individual and team competition in the off season head coach time line how to get it all started forms and letters player expectations coaching expectations how to plan practice practice schedule practice outline drills philosophy maybe a list of "every day" drills
anyhow, youi get the idea, if its part of the job, put it in writing.

i think if you use the forms section everyone would be able to download it without you having to send it out to everyone over and over
that part of the board will be awesome to keep the trading threads off of the true x and o and theory threads and it will still allow people to get the forms and things they need
calande, just post a thread over there about the packet, and say, coming soon
ummmkaay?

Hey Coach,
You are absolutly right in all aspects of team mgt. It would be great if the knuckleheads in school admin would learn from it and quit being part of the politically correct horsecrap they try to instill in our football programs. Politics off the field and football on it.
