Situation: You are ahead 38-33
Do you go for it on 4th and 2 with 2:13 remaining in the game with the ball on your opponents 45 yard line? If you get the 1st down you essentially win the ball game.
OR...
DO you punt it hopefully the ball is unreturnable and rolls out of bound inside the 10 yard line. Maybe at worst it goes into the endzone and your opponent must now travel 80 yard instead of 55.

Might try the old QBmotion play to get 5 the easy way but if not quick( punt!) Funny you say that! That's what I was thinking at the time... perfect time for that play! In reality, there's so many other varibles to consider- how's your defense playing? Offesnive line playing? How many timeouts? Is Vince Young the QB on the other team ;-) I honestly don't blame Carrol for trying to win it with his offense. I probably would have done the same. 2:00 is plenty of time for a good offense.

althought the "right" thing to do is punt.

have I been able to stop their offense at all during the game?

I would have punted but I understand where USC was coming from. It would be better to keep Vince Young on the sideline. But it would have also been better (IMO) to make Vince Young drive at least 80 yards.

On the other hand, Texas hadn't stopped White up the middle all night. Tough decision.

He made the right decision. IMO, there was a pretty good chance that Vince was going to carve up your defense again and win the ball game. In that situation you have to look at your OL and say look we need to get two yards and we are the National Champions. Texas stood up to the challenge and stoped him. I still think it was the right move.

I heard several fans this morning saying how Carroll "lucked into 2 National Championships....now we get to see how much of a moron he is..."
Sports Media in America keeps getting worse.

I would have gone for it with the way white was running up the gut

With the way white had been running the ball I would have went for it, although Texas haaad to know who was going to carry the ball in that situation and with that I might have punted, kinda hard decision to make. It would have been 50/50 chance I would have dont either. Maybe flipped a quarter and chosen either heads or tails.....lol

I don't mean to hijack the thread just didn't want to start another one, but would you have ran the same play? Would you have had Reggie Bush on the field so maybe not everybody in the stadium would know White was getting the ball? Would you maybe run that little Screen Swing pass and put the ball in Reggie's hands?

I'm with Tog, Punt it and trust in your defense, "to raise to the occasion."

things that must be factored into the decision:
1) can you stop them from going 55 in 2 minutes?...they probably answered no 2) can you stop them from going 80 in 2 minutes?...again, probably answered no 3) can you gain 2 yards vs their defense?...they obviously answered yes 4) can you gain 2 yards vs their defense by "going to the well" again?...again, probably answered yes
other things that may or may not have factored in:
5) how have they handled punting situations -- the rush, the return?...ross fumbled the 1st punt but is dangerous & looked the part on another 6) have they stopped us in a similar situation?...they were 50-50 at that time

i would have punted.....but if I go for it, i would have the ball in the hands of my heisman trophy winning running back...i don't care how good my bigger back-up running back is

looking back on the game and that situation if they had just run it on 3rd, kill some more clock and then run it again on 4th, they could have killed off another minute and still made the first down
instead they threw to the flat to the fb, incomplete, clock stopped then they are in a bind

I am not sure if they lucked into two antional titles. As they have only won one BCS title game. Therefore they have only won one national title since the BCS started Lsu won in 2003

I am not sure if they lucked into two antional titles. As they have only won one BCS title game. Therefore they have only won one national title since the BCS started Lsu won in 2003 while you are correct in saying LSU won the BCS championship and therefore the Coaches poll named the national champions (they are bound by the BCS) you are incorrect in saying USC won only 1 title recently. in 2003, the AP poll (which is not bound by the BCS -- and since has removed themselves from the bowl rankings formula) named USC #1 at the end of the year -- and LSU #2 -- making USC a national champion. so, 2003 had co-champs. the AP has long been the deciding poll in naming the national champion. BCS is a relative baby when compared.
