Just wondering how you guys divide your practice time? If you have a two hour workout and coach both varsity and JV, how do you divide the time? How many of you only coach one side of the ball? Do you practice your JV against the varsity? I know the size of the school has a lot to do with the questions. Just to tell you what we do. We first began doing it at a AA school with about 200 enrollment. We only coach one side of the ball. We did it with 6 coaches, 3 of. & 3 def. We are at a AAA school now and wil do it with 7 coaches, 4 off. 3 def. We never work our JV against our varsity. While one group is on offense, the other group is on defense. After aproximately one hour we switch. I say aproximately, because if the offense has varsity first, they just might run over a little, by accident. LOL Even when we were coaching both sides of the ball we did not work JV against varsity except in drill time.

"I say aproximately, because if the offense has varsity first, they just might run over a little, by accident. LOL" Now what are you saying here Split? Are you saying that us "O" guys run over a little on our time schedule? You know that we'd never do that. That's why I practice offense last...I have to make sure the defense doesn't run over into MY time. By the way, we used to do it the same way you guys do Split when I was at a 4A school. However, I much prefer to have all coaches coaching both sides of the ball. I think it keeps for good cohesion amongst the staff. I've seen too many staffs start blaming the other side of the ball when coaching one side. Just my take. Here, being so small, we coach both sides, but to our advantage (I guess) we don't have enough kids to have a JV. Heck, a freshman may have to play at this level.

I understand what you mean at that level, Champ. I also understand what you are saying about causing division on the staff. We are very fortunate in that respect. When we first started doing it, the staff had already been togeather for a few years and were good friends. That made it easier. The three that will be coaching defense this year were together last year at our previous school, so I don't foresee a problem. The OC here was our dline coach last year. As DC, I refuse to blame the offense and don't allow it on our side. We have too problems of our on without being concerned with what the offense is doing. The boss is the same way on the other side. He and I have been together too long to start pointing fingers.

How did you end up with one less coach than the O, Split? Less time and less coaches, what does that HC expect you to do?
We coach both sides of the ball here.(6 coaches) It allows us to have more sets of eyes on the O-line and that has made a big difference for us.

We play our guys both ways and most of our coaches work both sides of the ball. During 2-a-days we'll practice defense in the morning and offense in the afternoon. In-season we'll practice offense on Tuesday and defense on Wednesday for a Friday game. The JVs are mostly separate. They work fundamentals with the varsity (JV on JV, of course) and the JVs serve as the scout team during kicking game and the adjustment drill I posted earlier. During team and 7 on 7 periods they're separate. We do take some of the JV players as "part-timers" who practice full time with the varsity but play JV games.
