What are your immediate off-season activities?
Usually, it would involve designing the 12 week weight program into Spring ball and evaluating the talent / skill for next year.
Now - for me - the season has ended and I have resigned - I am a coach without a team (wwwweeeird).

well still have one more game
we are a new school, don't have varsity this year, so no playoffs
we will take up equipment, have a meeting about offseason, work with the kids on leadership and life skills for a week, and then hump it in offseason all the way until may

I'm with tog on the less fat thing. I put on 20 lbs this football season. Too much sitting on the couch with the VCR remote in one hand and food and drink in the other.
Brophy, I am close to your situation. I have not resigned but sure would like to. Need to move on and be a head coach again. What are your plans? I have a house payment, 2 kids and a wife with a good job, so I might be a little limeted in my ventures.

you can always sell a house
don't know about selling the wife though

I have a great wife. She understands all the hours of coaching, clinics, etc...
We have only been in the house for a year, capital gains taxes would kick our butts if we don't live there for 2 years.
I would work with you and Chuck any day of week.

yeah....the megaclinics are a great place to start. Also, check with the local colleges in your area (usually those coaches put together something).
I'll work for anyone with half a brain (might be a step up for me).
Me need to work on getting less fatter, too. The emotional investment in your program (stress / eating habits / drinky) can really take it's toll.
tog, I've distributed your resume to my local contacts - I'll keep you updated....should be A LOT of positions open up here soon.

brophy, why'd you resign? I read your game highlights page and it sounded like you guys were in there to the end in most of your games.

brophy, why'd you resign? I read your game highlights page and it sounded like you guys were in there to the end in most of your games. I was planning on moving to Texas / Louisianna in '06 to begin with (see how the 'big boys' play football). I had spent four years of our best efforts working tirelessly with the head coach and his brother to turn the program around. Maybe a fresh perspective is needed from another staff.... nearly a week since the season end, and I'm going out of my mind without a game / season to plan for.

I'll resign as JV HC then, I'm headed back to the West Coast, prepare a Defence Camp schedule, lots of travel this spring doing d-camps, then i might take up needle point until the season starts. Oh yeah, I guess I'll stop being grumpy for a change and say hi to the wife and kids once in awhile, who knows I might get a job too. www.westernsportscamps.com we will bring it to you if your interested in hosting $$$$$$$ in it for you also. email me for details.

A few years ago I went to an All-Sports Clinic in Irvine, CA. Was a really good clinic, and I learned alot. Anybody heard of this clinic? Do they still do them?

I guess my plan now (resigned) is to gather all the contacts I can and get a gig down in Texas to learn what "real" football is all about....
Working on a position (I will take anything and will coach anything) with Mike Woodley @ Sam Rayburn HS in Pasadena, Texas....we'll see.
I've got a LOT of work to do between now and then (networking)...
Oddly enough, I actually smile now (can't find anything to drive me up the wall now that the season is over)...
In the meantime, I make highlight cutups for some of my players and forward on to them and game film to colleges. Gave some of my better "pupils" instructional coaching tapes to chew on in the off-season...

That's a pretty good reason.
My family is in Louisianna. Personally I will probably only live in Texas or here in Florida. I like not having a state income tax. (and warm weather).
TOG, how new is your school, how did you do. Ours (actually the scholl my wife teaches at) is in it's second year, just finished first football season. First day of practice was spent teaching kids how to put on pads. Most of them had never played any football outside of Playstation. Word is that the HC isn't going to stick around and I am being asked to help out next year on offense.

I hear you TOG, spent the first full day in pads just teaching the kids how to put the things on. Played a split schedule of V and JV this year. was competetive in the JV games winning about all of them but struggled in the Varsity games. First game of the season was losing 35-0, got the kids to finally line up in the right positions at halftime and finished the game at 35-0 (V), second game won 8-0 in overtime(JV), and the third game 8-0(JV). but 2-1 with 10 stright quarters of shut out ball was the highlight. Young school, young staff. they are trying to talk me out of retirement (I say that jokingly as I used to be assistant in VA years ago) to help out with the Offense. If I can get my work scheduled around it I want to. The HC is the only one with experience (OL) but rumor is that he is leaving. He was suppose to be an assistant but when HC canidate #1 and #2 found out that it was a new school they backed out and it was either him or no FB so he accepted the "promotion."
Would be interested to hear how you handled the start up TOG.

I just try and stay positive with the kids and get them to realize they aren't going to win the super bowl next weekend, or by simply rolling their helmet out onto the field. There are a ton of issues beyond football around here that are beyond my control, that shouldn't even be issues, but hey, every place has that. This place just has that and appears to actually want those issues to be that way so the new school will not ever have a chance to compete.

Brophy, I've never been a head coach, but I can relate. Right after New Year's I became a coach without a team. Our staff was constant and even after three seasons, I was the low man when the school decided to cut a position. After a few nerve wracking months, I was hired as an assistant offensive and defensive line coach. I spent my whole time researching an offensive system I wasn't familiar with and coaching strategies in general. Good luck with this next stage in life!!

I have never been a head coach, though I will continue to study and prepare until I am.
It is very weird for ME....as I will be taking a position outside of my conference and in totally new surroundings as an assistant.
EVERY year, I am usually involved in the off-season prep (scouting / self-scouting / implementation plans / player workouts / etc) so now I'm in limbo.
I always plan to research schemes I feel I am deficient in (visiting programs), but without a team to go to (yet) in 2006, it makes the application part a little fuzzy.

Exactly! I spent most of last offseason researching the Spread (especially Urban Meyer's scheme) and what do we run at the school that hires me? Full-House, inverted Bone (some call it Diamond T), run it between the tackles every play. We were successful with it, but talk about being as far from Spread as possible!
