As a DC by nature I have a bais for the D side of the ball. As a game goal we want to hold the offense to under 13pts. Simple football..if our O can score 14pts we win...Has it ever been that simple??? We know the nature of the game..we have to be ready to play D at any moment even when we have turned the ball over on O. I think now days you need more than just D to win and be successful. A team needs to have to have the ability to move the ball somewhat. All 3 phase are equally important but I dont think you can get away with just 1.

i have always believed that offense was first and foremost about coaching. I think I can move the ball with average kids. that said, i have always believed that defense was first and foremost about athletes. You can coach up the defense all ya want but if you dont have kids that can run and tackle...it can make for some long nights. ...youd better have a well coached O. just as you said, you have to move the ball and be able to play keep away when you need to.

If I had to choose one side of the ball to be great at and the others had to average I would choose defense. A great defense coached by a great coordinator is tough to move the ball on. I always preach if they can't score we can't lose. A defense that does not allow big plays and big scores, does not make assignments mistakes, and pursues/tackles very well will take a team far. All phases of the game are important but in this "laboratory" question defense still pays the bills.

I would rather have my best ATH's on offense than have them on defense.

we put our best athletes on offense and our toughest kids who have no fear on defense. We have had too many kids here who can run like the wind and catch the ball, but refuse to tackle. We are finding that the majority of our defensive players are our wrestlers.
I agree with calande on his response. On defense if you can find kids who will play hard, tackle and run to the football like a bunch a crazed dogs you will have a good defense.

I personally believe that you're offensive philosophy has a profound effect on how what your defense needs to do-
1. If you run a pass heavy offense that relies on burning up the score board, your defense has the potential to spend a lot of time on the field. In my experience (and its limited compared to most of you) defenses that spend a great deal of time on the field eventually give up points, simply due to the fact that the other offense has the ball. So in essence, the defense doesn't win the game for you.
2. If you run a more ball control oriented attack (passing or rushing) that relies on putting up a few scores and running out the clock, then your defense is going to be far more important. When they do get on the field, they need to force three and outs and get your ball hogging defense on the field. In this situation, the defense cannot give up the big plays because you're offense may not be be prepared to respond.

Everyone says "defense wins championships", however (and maybe this is just me) I seem to notice that whenver someone becomes a HC, they call the offense. EVEN if they were the defensive coordinator beforehand, more often than not, they take over the offense.
Don't get it.

had this arguement with our Frsoh coach the other day...his point was that there has only been a handful of Super Bowls that were defensive battles. My point was even the blow outs were defensive battles, even if it was only one defense (the one scoring all those points didnt do it by driving 80 yards each series) was there to battle. you cant tell me the year the Bears won the Super Bowl their defense didnt do its job?

TEAMS win championships........... Exactly. Defensively, our life is easier if the offense is moving the ball and scoring. It doesn't always work out that way, though. There no excuses. It's easier to stop the other guy if he gets the ball on his 20. If he gets it on your 20, well, that's what the big bucks are for.

Yeah, we can keep them from crossing the 50 but.....you got to be able to do something with it after we give it to you.How times(and I know we all have had those nights)have you looked down the sideline at the OC when the D has been playing its guts out....."Can we please score a stink'n point!!" Your teams that won Super Bowls with geat D..Bears.Ravens etc could move the ball. Look at college ball..Texas..USC...FSU...play hellified D but where would they be without that ability to move the ball?? You only get 2pts on D..you get 3pts for a field goal....you play all the D you want..your O doesnt get off the hump.. you still lose that game 3-2!!

When the D is playing great you put yourself in a postion where you can take more chances on offense. Like going for it on 4th down, or taking that deep shot. If your D is giving up lots of points I at least would be more apt to punt on 4th down and give my defense more field.

I coach at a AAA school and not only do we use our guys all three ways but most of the AAAs here do. It sure eliminates a lot of arguments about who plays where.

defense wins championships. well I think there is some truth to it. the only problem I have with it is, you ask your defense to be perfect game in and out.
i take the philosophy we are going to out score you. what this does from my defense is two things, they can be very aggressive as they know we are going to score points throwing the ball and they know they only have to stop the other team 1 time for us to win. see my theory is this, we get up by 21 and the other team now has to for the most part adandon their game plan if they are a running team. the clock now works against you. to me that is the best situation as we now can force a team to do things they do not want to do. so my theory is score early and score often. you score 28 points at halftime, most teams the game is starting to slip away from them.
nothing better then seeing a team have to throw which does not practice throwing. we get our shotguns out to shoot those wounded ducks they call forward passes.
now if you are going to say defense wins championships and you run the ball every down, then i would agree with you.

Yes it does. We were very young on defense last year and it showed We scored in the 40's twice lst year and lost both in regualtion. Besides, I don't see any teams playing below average defense in the state finals.

I like the term that offense wins games while defense keeps you in games.
