Most of us know that the "H-Back" is one of those players that is part FB and Part TE, but occasionally I will talk to someone and they will think I am talking about the "Half Back" what they know as the Tailback or RB.
This got me thinking, "Why was the term H-Back used as the designator for this guy." As far as I knew growing up Joe Gibbs invented it but I am pretty sure now that I am "wiser" (codeword for I am about to break the threashold of 30) that someone had to use it before as there are not that many original thoughts in football.
I am curious as to if anyone knows any more history about the "H-Back" including the chosen term to describe him.

Don't know if this is right, had a coach I played for call it a Hybrid (H) back....Made sense to me.
