anyone using PDA's?
I am thinking about using digitalstats for next fall and buying a PDA. I'm just looking to see what other uses we would use the PDA other than stats.

Have toyed around with the idea of having the backup QB record the offensive plays on a PDA or tablet PC with Digital Scout type software - replacing the old clip board. Then you could immediately load the play data into your digital editing program (DSV, Proscout, etc) Seems like a good idea for self scouting. Could do it for defensive calls too. It'd be nice to have an overlay on the video of the plays called when breaking down the game. Anyone done this? Problems with sync'ing plays or other issues? I haven't pulled the trigger on doing this yet because it may be one of those ideas that's better on paper -- not worth it in the real world.

check with your state regs first... most states dont allow for electronic devices like PDAs to be used for scouting, but will allow video or voice recordings....unlike NM we arent allowed to use anything but pencil and paper

I have owned a bunch of PDA's over the years and I have never considered the idea. I think it would be tough to do. Data input into a PDA is tedious. You are either using a very tiny set of keys or you are using a very tiny and hard-to-hold stylus. Tapping on on a LCD screen might be ripe for abuse - and would not be a good idea in wet weather. I would think it would be better to enter the data using a laptop in the booth by someone who has a headset.

Check out - www.digitalscout.com/football/scoutware.phpFor self scouting, all formations and plays are already entered in the system. It would be simply using the stylus to choose from the pull down list. probably as quick as writing by hand. To start with I'd probably only have the backup QB enter the formation(w/motion if any) and the play name. After he got comfortable with it, you could have him enter the yards gained. The software would auto calculate the down, dist and LOS.

jd,
We just bought a cheap (black and white screen) PDA and it works great for the stats. None of us are organized enough to need something to tell us that we are unorganized ;D We love Digital Scout statware......10 minutes after I get into my classroom after a game I have all the stats from the game plus the cum stats from the previous game. IMHO Unless you like to be organized I would get a low end PDA and just use it for football.
I talked with Digital Scout this fall and they claim that they will have something out for next season that will be compatible with the pocket pc/blue tooth stuff.

We've got the digital scout scoutware and statware. We don't use the scoutware anymore because we get the same reports out of proscout. Never tried using scoutware during a game and don't know if it's possible because there's a bunch of exact stuff to put in between plays and I don't know if there's enough time to do it real time. But maybe if you're good enough with it it's possible. We do use the statware during games and sync the pda to our computer right after to get the stats. That's fairly simple. We had a kid do it the past 2 years as an eighth grader and freshman. You can get a pda that will work on ebay for fairly cheap, we got a black and white one like was mentioned before, just make sure it's got the right software because some of the older ones have sync problems.

Does the scoutware keep the same stats that the statware does? i'd love to be able to use the statware to make adjustments at half time. Ie. Check ypc per hole or per play. Tough to do by hand.
