Coaches -
I am an assistant coach for a small-school program. We usually have around 20 varsity players and more than half of our starters play both ways.
My head coach has directed me to do some research to see what other small high schools do in terms of practice schedules.
My email is cdertz@eastland308.com or you can just reply in this thread.
Thanks alot. I appreciate the help.

Coach, we're about the same as you in numbers. Our head coach likes to have offensive and defensive days, where you can work on what you like as long as it keeps to the theme. As it gets closer to the first game, he'll do a special teams day. I kind of like it!

I used to favor separate offensive/defensive days until lightning cancelled a few practices...now i believe in 3 hour sessions, 2 hours offense, 1 hour defense.

by school policy, we have to be done by at 5:30. We get out of school at 2:55, so combined with getting taped, heat and ice, and dressing, we don't start warm up until 3:25. That's why we do one a day tuesday and wednesday, combined on Monday and Thursday.

We can practice as long as we want, weather permitting. And if we're doing something interesting/challenging the players don't mind a long day every now and then! Just gotta keep it fun!

We use guys both ways and I like it from a coaching standpoint. I coach OL and DBs, which gives me a chance to get to know most of the kids on the team. We also do offensive and defensive days. Wednesday is defensive day for us and that helps me in terms of preparation because it gives me an day to get scout cards and scripts together as well as refine the game plan.

I need to correct myself a little, I said" we could work on anything, as long as it keeps with the theme" but usually the HC will give me one specific thing that he also wants covered that day, for example if its an offensive day he might tell me to work on his 35/36 counter blocking scheme vs. different fronts at some point during the day. We'll do this as well as any fundamentals that I want to work on, so when we all come together for a scrimmage, he can go thru more of his plays without having to stop and teach blocking assignments!

We have 21 in a suit and our practice schedule goes like this: Monday- Cover all special teams Defensive alignment and adjustments to Opponent's Offense Base Run Plays Vs. Opponents Base Defense Tuesday Punt Def. Skill Inside Run Team D Outside D Team Offense (Usually base runs and Goalline run) Wednesday Kickoff and Extra Point Defense Alignment and Adjustments Skill O (Basically just warm QB up, do a few drill w/ Line and backs/rec's) lasts about 5 Min. Group O Team O Thursday Polish All Special Teams Team D Team O
We don't get to caught up in periods and all of that. We work on something until we like it. We also have to practice longer because basically everyone has to play on everthing.
