Got to thinking about some things today after talking with a fellow coach who runs the option.
If you are running a strictly option offense part of the reason you run it is because your OL is not as dominant. So why then have a power game along with your option. Granted you need 1 short yardage play but since your OL is not dominating wouldn't having a somewhat diverse passing game be a better menu choice to go along with the triple? Something along the lines of 3 dropback concepts and 3-4 quick passing concepts to go with the play actions.
It was something that got me thinking because you must devote time to the option so you cannot do too many things. If the box is loaded with defensive players outnumbering your option game then running power stuff is not going to help that but passing successfully would force them to back off.
What do we think?

Why run power stuff to go with option? Same reason that knuckleballers also throw a fastball. Although the fastball may be sub-par, when the batter's waiting on a knuckler, a 70 MPH fastball is devastating. Get a defender who's ready to play assignment football vs. option and hit him with power or zone blocking and you have the same effect. That doesn't mean that I don't think that being able to throw the ball would be good. Why shouldn't you be able to run option, some power, and some dropback? The power stuff isn't hard for the QB. A basic dropback pass pro scheme is no big deal for the OL. You were planning to teach them to pass some anyway, weren't you?

We played a team a last year that ran something like this from the spread I. As an outside backer, it was terrible because you had to respect the option first. They did a really nice job of making a quick fake to the fullback and getting receivers outside or behind the linebackers. They killed us doing that.

What do we think? navy and georgia southern run the rocket toss sweep. it is a great addition to the spread triple option, as the slotback goes in motion just like he would in the option. the line only as to block a few people. navy ran it a ton vs colorado st in the bowl game. the rocket toss is a offense all to its own self as well.
