looking for best way to set up a lift-a-thon where most money can be raised?

DO NOT have a max-out lift-a-thon. Lost a player when I was in HS to a shoulder injury.
Do a like, 100lb event...and make pladges based on how many reps a kid can do.
Do it in the gym. Do it before school lets out for the summer Before or after a basketball game Get some people in attendance
Prior to: Make out pledge forms for the kids. Test the kids, see where they are now. Make the competition a month or so away.
Explain to the kids that they want to beat their test, they have 1 month to prep...help make them work hard towards it, etc etc.
Just some random thoughts. Most of all, do not do a max out lift-a-thon.

That is a great idea for a lift-a-thon...makes me think of the combine lifting (how many reps of 225)

Did a Lift-a-thon for my Weightlifting Club at my high school last year. Used a website called "Easyfund Raising"...you can get them at easyfundraising.com (no, I don't work for them). They have an online collection system that worked GREAT for me. Granted, it's a little difficult to navigate...and you can't do it the week before your lift-a-thon....but they set up your lift-a-thon with its own website, then you get the email addresses of your kids, put 'em in and they get to establish this mini-webpage of their own that they send out to all their family, friends, etc. Those folks can make pledges online and when your fundraiser is over, they send out an email and the people who pledged can pay online with a credit card. I was getting checks for 6 weeks...and they do the chasing. Everything is free until you start collecting money, and then they take 20% of what they collect. But you can also collect lump sum donations or the kids can pick up the pledges manually and you don't pay them anything for that. Check it out...I liked it and raised $4,000 in one day with both my boys and girls teams lifting (about 60 lifters).

Football Liftathon
To run a successful football program requires a considerable amount of money. As district funding decreases each year, the football players and boosters have to make up the difference in funded needed. The money we raise goes to buy safety equipment (special shoulder pads etc. ), tape, weightlifting equipment, gamenight supplies, team shirts, and a variety of other needs. To raise money for the football program, we will be having a Lift-a-thon on August 10th. Each player will bring in a list of 10 names. Try to come in with the names of relatives or friends that are not the same people you usually look to for sponsors. We will send a letter of explanation of why we are trying to raise money and a self addressed stamped envelope to each person. At the liftathon, everyone will total 1000 pounds lifting in several lifts. We will ask the letter recipients to sponsor you for a certain amount a pound. If they sponsor you for a penny a pound, that would be 10 dollars. The total will always be 1000 pounds, no more and no less. You will add a personal note to each letter. The return letters will have your name on them. Not sure where I saw this recently (if anyone knows give them credit) but they ran a lift a thon based on kids GOALS in the weight room. The kids get money donated depending upon if they reach their weight goals......I thought that was a cool idea......

to respond to an earlier reply: why can't you do it with a max out. We max out at various other points during the off-season. Just because you had a guy injured doesn't mean you never max out, in my opinion. Just curious to hear from other people, because most people I know do max during their lift a thons.

I didn't see a video or anything to link, but our HC went and said it was pretty exciting for those guys who broke school and PR's. Thought it would be a neat thing to do at our level for community involvement.

Coachchad, at the second program I coached at, that's exactly what we did. During our spring lifting, two weeks before maxouts, the kids went around for taking donations. We figured by that time, they would have a ballpark figure on what they would max at. We also gave them charts to show parents, grandparents, friends, whoever how much kids would be maxing at. Most just gave an upfront donation which is of course fine. And, then on max day, everything was recorded and tallied to figure how much was raised. We did try to get the baseball and track players to come in and at least recored a max so we could raise more money; some did and some didn't.
