What role should captains play on a team? How do you pick them?

Our head coach talks to all of our seniors about leadership during the summer and what role they all have as seniors on the football team no matter if they are choosen as a captain or not.
The first day of practice the head coach will inform the team that they will be voting on the team captains in 2 weeks at the end of our 2 a day practices. He will list some characteristics that each team member should be looking for in the captains.
We have found by going to this method the vote does not turn into a popularity contest. Last year was our first year of doing this and it was the best group of captains we have had since I have been here.

JD,
That is some great stuff, I'm even considering that approach. We are not far from that now. We do have the kiddos vote, but it is secret ballot. We make sure that the 'right' ones were voted for.

How we choose captains is as follows: All interested (usually seniors, but we have had some JRs) submit a type-written letter that explains their definition of leadership, their qualifications and why they should be chosen. Then they interview with a committee of a coach, and a player from each class. The committee then gives their recommendations to the HC and the team. We plan on having a vote after all of this but have not needed it because: 1) we are a small school and not many apply (only 2 seniors last season), and 2) only those who really want it put their name in. This year we had 6 qualified applicants…and decided to name all 6 as rotating captains. That will work with this group- with some it may not.
