I've always tried to live my professional life according to some advice I got as a young coach. The advice I got was this: "If you are moving from a higher position to a lower one, it had better be for more money" and "don't make any lateral moves". With that being said, I'm stuck in one heck of a perdicament. When I got here, we had a different DC. He and the HC had some problems about the DC's work ethic, so he let him go and I stepped in as DC. Now we haven't had steller seasons at all since I came in as a position coach, but we haven't been that bad considering the team was like 4-26 over the previous 3 seasons, before I came. Anyway, the HC has stepped down and now we're looking for a new HC. I'm sure you all deal with "you scratch my back, I'll scratch your's", but it is really bad around here. Now, the only candidates I've heard mentioned, and these are names coming from my boss, are "good-ole boys", both of which are planning on bringing back this DC, with the horrible work ethic, because he's a member of the clique. I said all of that to say this, would it hurt my career to go back to being a position coach at this school? Should I be looking for somewhere else to go? Or do I just pray that one of those "good-ole boys" doesn't get hired?
Some of you HC's, what would you think if someone applied for a job under you and their resume included something like this on it?

I wouldnt stay. I would be moving on.

Each situation is so different. I would ask a person about their work history and give them a chance to explain. I would understand if you stayed because of family reasons or something like that.
Are you getting looked at for the job?

Are you getting looked at for the job? I thought about applying, but decided against it. When I took over as DC, I knew I was ready. There were some questions about this position, so I didn't apply. The only thing that I keep looking at and thinking about is the possibility of a recession. I would hate it if I took a different job, stayed one year and then had to be let go because of cut-backs.

I would try and find a spot at another school. If your moving down, a change of scenery may be good as well.

RECESSION PROOF your job. Look at the Junior High or perhaps at other schools, which are near by.

What that means is that after you work at your present teaching assignment for 3 years you cannot be non-renewed, unless it is direct insubordination or something to that effect. I have seen some individuals around this area, teach at one high school and coach at another one.

I wouldnt stay. I would be moving on. I wouldn't go back to being a position coach at the school where I was demoted from being the DC. You got demoted...how well will the kids respond to you back as a position coach? Also, I would definitely develop some options, find alternative coaching positions. Wait, see who gets the HC job, see what they are going to do in the way of coaches and make your decision then. Haven't got demoted just yet, but it's looking that way. And truly it doesn't have anything to do with coaching or player treatment. It's just the way things are around here. I'm planning on waiting to see who is hired as HC, but I don't want to get burned. I see your point about the kids. The thing that really burns me is, I'm really the only football coach that cares about the program. Since the HC has resigned, I've taken over everything. The other asst. coaches don't even step foot in the fieldhouse, now. I don't want to put in all this hard work and then be left with nothing.

This story sounds all too familiar. A coaching friend of mine was the DC for a school in our conference that was not that successful. The school changed HCs and the new guy who was a graduate of the school brought in a bunch of his buddies, including a new DC. My friend didn't even get a chance to interview with the new HC for the DC job. The administration decided to make a new paid coaching position for my friend, but he would just be a position coach. Anyway, I got the HC at a local school and called my friend to be my DC. The timing was perfect. He still is teaching at that school, but is my DC. Anyway, the school he teaches at didn't do that well this year and we had a pretty good year going 7 and 2 in the regular season. When we played his former team I am sure there were high emotions on both sides. We beat them something like 48 to 6. After the game their new HC was pretty classless. Anyway, I said all of that to say my friend is a very good DC. We only gave up 87 points during the regular season. I would try to find a school in your area that you could coach at. You don't want to stay with a program where the other coaches don't care and you are not valued.

Have you put your name out for any coordinator jobs in your area? If there are any left, it's something to think about.
