how many shots per quarter do you take?
do you have a preset number that you force yourself to call?
what is the reasoning behind your taking shots?
also, are your shots trick oriented, or something as simple as a called fade or deep play action pass?

depends on the situation
if you get a big return on PR then go for the throat..
it also depends on the mo, if you have it or you are trying to kill it for the other sideline
nothing kills mo more than a quick strike TD from 50-60 yards out.
this is something I learned from my college HC and OC, if you need something big, go 4 verticals.

oz, do you have it a set rule on your placall sheet to do it 2 times a quarter or anything like that as a general rule,
something as a reminder to you to just take a shot

our oc likes to throw the deep ball at least 3 times in the 1 and 2 quarter from the gun. Just to see how the FS will react, it is more of chess move.

the number of shots we take is based on several things but in predetermining a set number in game planning we ask these questions: 1) WHY? what are we trying to achieve? 2) WHO? which defender is most susceptible to being beaten on the long ball or will bite on the short route allowing a deeper route to open up? 3) WHEN? what sets allow for this? what down & distances? what scenarios (i.e. change of possesion, turnover, backed up, etc.)? 4) WHAT? what types of shots are most likely to work vs the defense we're facing? 5) HOW? how will we set these up? how will we use them to our advantage?

We usually take shot #1 with the first play and it is usually a trick play of some sort. From there we try to do it after a sudden change of posession or if mo is shifting etc.

i like the "lull them to sleep with the same play over and over" and then hit them with an exotic

Yeah, it's usually based outta some trick formation that we have for them. Better to get it over with quick.
