Coaches I will be coaching a 7-8 year old team this year and would like to know what you do as a prepractice warmup. I would like to just do a 10 minute Dynammic Warmup as opposed to the more common 15 minute static stretch period most people use. How do you guys start your practice.

I've yet to see a 7 year old stretch or warm up before recess and I've never seen or heard of a child pulling a muscle

we start our practice with a 2-3 minute high tempo dynamic warm up, 10-12 lines of 3 kids per line we do each exercise 10 yards then back 10 yards, so each rep has 12 kids going at once: high knees butt kicks shuffles team take offs from each players stance on movement of the ball
for us this is as much about "starting practice with some discipline and team building" as it is about stretching, this whole period involves team clapping to start each rep etc
our routine stays teh same from day 1 to day 50, after 2-3 practices our kids get in line and can run the program themselves although I as HC will supervise and set the tone for the day, total for our team of 35 kids is 3-4 minutes max to start and complete
we then immediately move into our cone/ladder team agility stations which take between 7-10 minutes depending on how things are going, again this is multi stations (4 ladders or sets of cones) we do the typical agility bag work stuff at fast tempo with coaches at each station resetting cones etc
based on the practice schedule for the day I may alot 10 or up to 15 minutes for this period, on days we have 10 min we move quickly on days we have 15 we slow down the team take off and cone portion or really stress something depending on need (alot of off sides in a game = we will do 5-6 reps of team take off etc)
usually our tuesdays (1st day back) we will take 15 minutes and make this a competetive drill (each line vs each line fewest cones knocked over etc) on thursday and saturdays (our pre game practices) we will get it done in 10 and move onto the next portion
we do the same routine for pre game although we may go to fewer lines and to keep the kids fresher
we find that if we have many stations and fast tempo at the end of the period our kids need a water break (which is good, we are getting conditioning in as well) which they get as I bring the team in and lay out the practice plan and expectations in a 1-2 minute team briefing
1 thing we started doing was giving the kids a quick summary of the practice routine to help them move from station to station ie we'll tell tehm we're going to indy then O and D to install and review then we'll be doing oakies, moving into punt vs punt return and then 11 on 11 etc
some coaches don't like to spend time on agility drills, we find that the 10-15 minutes we invest in it per practice has really helped us, more so with the bottom half of the roster in improving simple movement skills and it has really helped with our team focus when we add in the element of a punishment for cones knocked over etc or kids who tend to not finish drills

We always start with our contain drill, because it's mostly just running around. We start as soon as we have a critical mass of players and continue until 10 minutes after the official start of practice.

Thanks for the input coaches. I think we will do the quick dynamic warmup and get into our agility circuits. I have never really been big on stretching before practice. Seems like a waste of practice time to me. Glad to see I am not the only coach thinking this way.

You don't need to do static stretching with 7 year olds, they are too young to pull anything. They have to reach puberty. Dynamic is fine.

We actually do both. But as you guys said... To get a 7 year old to actually stretch is difficult and unneeded

Pretty much go to your drill work. When a parent complains that they didnt even stretch and they might pull their hamstring. Tell them to go to school and when the recess bell rings watch the kids go play full speed ahead, no stretching, no injuries.

We start our practice with individual "O". Line runs the circle drill and backsdo mirror play drills. No stretching.
