if you had a coach this is his second year coaching, but he is very smart and hungry football coach, but he is still learning on the job, i.e, wants to sometimes over do things. He has dreams and hopes of one day being a Coordinator and HC.
And you had to spots available where you place him, Last year he was your Varisty OLB Coach and JV Defensive Coordinator.
His 1st love is Offensive, you have 2 spots available this year, with him in mind, do you place him at Varisty RB's Coach or 9th Grade Head Coach?

how well does he get along with kids? How do the kids view him (respect)?
That is probably the most important aspect of coaching. X's & O's is the easy part - communicating is the friction point - can he DO the job? What is best for your program (not the individual)?

from personal experience. the job of head 9th grade coach is much more demanding than a varsity rb coach...just my opinion....youi have to be able to coach all of the positions at least a little bit to be a frosh head coach and do justice.

Have you asked him where he wants to be? How involved are your ninth grade coaches with varsity on game night? For some coaches that would be a good fit to coach ninth grade then be in the booth etc, and learn about the game that way. One thing I have learned is you must have a good ninth grade coach who knows the game & fundamentals but also gets kids excited about football and will not turn them off.

?? How important is winning at the freshmen level? ? Have to look at your philosophy. Mine may be different, but as freshmen I want all my kids to learn fundamentals of what we do and become proficient at execution of those fundamentals on the playing field. Winning is secondary. I also want all those freshmen to play and have some fun too. Frosh and JV coaches have 1 job, get the kids to me. If they start with 25 I want to get 25. So in this case if the young coach was willing to put aside the ego that he HAS to win at all costs, and fit himself into the philosophy of my program at that level, I might throw him a bone and let him be the head Frosh. coach. If he was not willing to do so, I would want him as close to me as possible, and he would coach the RB's. I also agree the job as a head freshmen or for that matter JH coach is very demanding. My guys are outstanding, have same view as me, even if I have to prod them sometimes to be sure it is "happening" and not just being paid lip service.

He was in the booth this year, as a varisty coach. He does know all the postions and coach Freshman fine, He would be good at teaching the boys the fundamentals and he could take on the responbility. Our 9th grade problem has 5 coaches.
Winning is secondary to us on the 9th grade level, fundamentals 1st.
