I have a "Building a Championship season, one brick at a time" We then take a brick - talk about what it means ex - can't build anything with one. Have a base - character, teamwork, etc. then the rest of the bricks have the other teams name on them = creates a pyramid with 9-0 on top.
We then use the bricks as player of the game awards red = player of the game black = big hit /tackle / block
Kids love it, well just my 2 cents

Along the brick theme we had a coach one year who taught carpentry. He had a wood engraver. We gave out the "Big Hit" award. We bought 10 ax handles and the winner had his name, number, opposing team, the score, and the date engraved on the handle. Cost us about $45, but the kids loved them. We gave them out at film session on Monday, one player got three on the season.

I am big into teamwork but I fear the link in the chain analogy because I think it can turn players against one another. It stresses the individual a lot and as the reason for failure instead of placing the reason for failure upon the group as a whole. What does this say to your best players? The wall analogy works better for me.

In order to slay the dragon, teams need warriors who are eager to stare down the beast.

I heard Marvin Lewis addressing his team on "Sounds of the Game" on NFL network, he had a shovel and was talking about "...we're in this together and everyone must shovel THEIR pile" and everything would take care of itself. Thinking about using that some how for this season...we had issues last sesaon with players looking to "get theirs" and or cover for players they thought couldn't get the job done - yes trust issues, especially on defense.
I also like the idea from the book "Season of Life" by Jeffery Marx, and the coaches at Gilman who draw on the parable in the Bible about talents and everyone must "Bring and give all their talents" whether you are a player with only "2 talents" or the player with "8 talents" we need 'em all. I teach/coach at a public school - don't know how much of the religion I could incorporate, but I think it could work.
Finally, similar to easternkentuckycoach, we gave away a big stick award each monday to the player with the biggest hit from Friday night. The captains decided we should give travel-size sticks of deodorant - the players got a kick out of it.

Everytime I read it, I almost get chills. I don't know what it is about it, but I love it.

I have seen a lot of people do the Hold the Rope as there motto for the season. We used it last year for our last game which decided if we came in 2nd or 3rd.
Keep these coming I really like reading these.

The wall analogy works better for me. i see your point. i think if you go about it by explaining that at some point during this season each player will have to be the strongest link on the chain it can help the kids understand that they have to play every down to the best of their ability because they don't know when or where it will happen, but their teammates will rely upon them to be strong.
