ok heres the situation. we have had a terrible program for the last 15 years or so. Bottom of the league every year. We play in a pretty good league. We didnt have a good record this year but we were very competitive and got a couple big upsets. Our league is being realigned and we will now only be having 5 league games. The first 5 weeks of the season it is up to us to find 5 non league opponents. Out of the 5 league games we should definetely win 2 of the games, and have a decent chance in another 2 games. So me and the HC decided lets just find 5 terrible teams that we know we can whoop, get 5 wins, maybe 4 if we do something totally terrible going in to league play. then win 2 or 3 league games finish 7-3 maybe 8-2 and figure that will be good enough for us to get into playoffs.
What do you guys think about this? Weak opponents will earn us no respect and we wont make playoffs even with 7 wins? weak non league schedule will set us up to do bad in league play??

Not sure on the playoff picture, but the fastest ways to improve a program are to build the strength program and increase the number of athletes participating. Winning 7 or 8 games may help you get more kids out in the future.

thats exactly what we are going for coachbw. Part of the reason for our lack of success is that every year we are raped for talent by other schools. A ton of our kids go to other schools in the same city as us. Thy get fake adresses and the other schools HC's recruit to get these kids to come over after middle school. We are also in same city as de la salle and they do their fair share of middle school raping
By having a winning record we are hoping kids will stop going to other schools and wanna com to ours like they are supposed to

Winning cures a lot of things IMO. That being said, I wouldn't necessarily get the sisters of the blind on your schedule. Maybe get a few of those, but have at least 1 non league game where you will be challenged, but should win.

well out of the 5 games we need, we already have one. second year of a 2 year deal for week 1. We beat them 13-0 but it was very tight til the end. That should be our challenging but victorious game for us. Other than that the other 4 games we are planning on playing are going to be gauranteed wins

Coach:
Do you have any programs that try to tie the middle school to your high school? I.E. high school to middle school mentorship program, high school coaches "guest" coaching (maybe with a couple of your players) at a few practices, weekly "middle school practice players of week" attend the varsity game & have full access to sidelines and pre-game locker room, program-wide summer softball league made up of just your players (mix middle school with varsity players), or program-wide pre-season meal, potluck, BBQ.
I could be completely wrong by this, but winning only seems to be a small portion of the problem. I'm sorry if you already do this, but it seems to me that you need to build loyalty to your school before the end of the middle school season. Afterall, they are your kids and you have the full right to develop trust on a daily basis.
Also, are your middle school coaches completely gung-ho on turning around the varsity program? If they are, you need to address this issue with them and have them discuss the program's goals on a daily basis.

thats just it there are no middle school teams here. There are youth teams but we can not supposed to have any undue influence when talking to these kids or it is considered "recruiting". althoughother coaches get it done. I am going to try to have the admin let all pop warner kids in to our games free if they are wearing their jerseys. We cant recruit these kids openly because for city but 3 high schools. So the kids are split up between the 3 schools depending on where they live

I say you get the easy wins early and build up to region play.

I've had the privilege of helping build 3 programs. GET THE WINS! It builds morale in the players you have, and gets the numbers up! Basketball and baseball have 20+ games to play some BIG programs - you only have 10 games. Get the wins, build the program, and THEN take on the giants!
