5 points to remember Before audibilizing: By American football monthly 1. Blocking. Is everyone accounted for?If not, check off to a play going away from any unassigned defender. On pass play, Consider having a running back help out the blocking instead of running a route. Or call a timeout.Everyone must be blocked.
2.The box. How many players are lined up in the box?Do you see any advantages or areas you can exploit? Are they too many defenders on the edges, giving you an advantage up the middle. Are there not enough defenders in the box? Maybe you counter with a run up the middle or a QB draw.
3.Blitzes. Maybe the Dc thinks you can be rattled so he is going to send everyone at you on this play.Do you want to stick with the PAP called and just release it quicker?Or maybe let them and burn them with a screen?what about the fade? Is that a better Option?Consider all these questions carefully-but quickly, remember there is a play clock.
4.Know your own teams strength and weaknesses. If your star receiver has single coverage and the Safety won't be able to help, get your star the ball. If your right side of the line isn't giving you much time to throw, maybe you should be rolling out away from that side when it appears the defense is loaded to that side.
5. Do you feel more comfortable calling your play rather than the one drawn up in the huddle? Your confidence is very important, so if you think it's a better play and the first four items on your checklist have been met, change the play.
